Now it's closed, why not say a few nice things about that little spot down Faulkner's Lane? There's plenty of threads here bitching about the place... how about a few nicities now it's dead and gone?

The thing with Taboo is.... it has a lot of criticism levelled against it but the punters keep on coming. So obviously they're doing something right. Nobody is forced to drink there, it's not as if a gay/lesbian couple have no other watering holes in the city. Every pub has a unique atmosphere and speaking from a purely personal point of view, I love the ambiance in Taboo. I find the bar staff and management incredibly friendly and would count many of them among my close friends.

Okay, so Mary and Taboo are in business to make money, but who isn't?? At least she opened up a fun and lively alternative to the more relaxed Loafers, and before her, who was there?
Nobody!!!
Taboo's only been open three years and already they've redecorated lots and tried lots of different nights. Personally I can't wait to get back to Cork and go totally mad in there. I've always had a blast in Taboo.....

Well I have always been a huge fan.... OK OK so the door on the toilet ( or lack thereof ) may have rankled a little ... but I have always liked the place a lot and the people who worked there were ( are ) a brilliant bunch of people.
Also lets not forget it had a huge effect when it opened its doors first on opening up the scene to a whole bunch of new people and in fairness it did for Loafers what Michael O'Leary did for AerFungus - it drove them to make improvements that we all benefited from.
I look forward to TabooTwo

You know, I'ver never seen Mary and Michael O' Leary in the same place at the same time!
Taboo TwoJudgement Day. Teehee!
Yeah I must say that before I became a social recluse, taboo, for a time was a second home to me. I think the staff and the regulars sevred as a surrogate family as I came out to myself without the support of my parents. Taboo gave me a dahling Mummy and some absolutley fantastic nigfhts out... not that I can remember many of them!

I worked in Taboo for a few months and it was quite enjoyable. Nice place to work, staff are looked after well and the pay is better than most bars in the city.

most are really realy pleasent and I have nothing but Praise for them. Paulie is simply delightful. Lol is a dote, Pat is very polite. Mary is just fabulous (no matter what anyone may think) She is a lovely woman. I could go on but I have have bad experiences with one or two. Shame that there is a few bad apples to ruin the Barrell

Ok so I feel I need to post here, Taboo, I liked I loved, I used to call it the Gay Cheers of Cork. I met some of my closest friends in there, had very happy times and sad times in their. Ah the nights I was the last out the door, the nights Christy used to shout up the stairs at me. It was the second gay bar I ever went too. How could I forget the first night I went in there, hehe.
It was a Thursday night, the UCCLGB SOC arranged to meet up there for a few drinks, the girls were supossed to come too, but did they? No, I was the only girl there, ah but what a night I had.
I met one of my best friends that night, it was so funny these guys came in and sat with us for the night trying to convince us to help them orgainse a gig in the Mallow race course. They would move.
Sure I went once, I had to go again............. TO BE CONTINUED..........

i have to say that when i was first introduced to taboo, i really liked the place and loved going there. it just had an entire different atmosphere to what u find in loafers or the club. however, in the last year that changed and the fact the place was so small became a problem. however, i personally have a lot of very nice memories of nights out in the place with people... ill miss it a lot. i even went there a couple of times on my own and people were always welcoming and began talking to me. i couldnt imagine that happening in any other bar in cork.

I'v only been out in corks scene once at new years and I liked Taboo. Because it was new years, there was a handy crowd, lots of smiles. It was my first time out so it will always be a fond memory to me. That being my one and only, so perhaps in my own youthful way im lucky that i never got the chance to fall into an attitude of dissing the place. And I was fortunate enough it seams not to have needed to use the toilets there. So for me Taboo will always be a place of new beginnings.
Will the next generation of scene boys live in a cork known as AT? (after Taboo) or is it still planned to reopen else where?

This may be a tribute to Taboo OR a sign that I should lay off the sauce BUT three days after it closed I was talking to a friend on the phone and finished the conversation with the line
" See you later in Taboo for a pint "

I was never a huge fan of Taboo but was honestly sad when i heard it closed. Sad because Cork had one less gay venue. I know that Instinct is opening and that Taboo is apparently re-locating but wouldn't it be great to hear that Taboo was staying open and Mary was planning to open up a second bar to compete with Instinct.

that would have been perfect...two taboos...no doubt they'd still attract different crowds if the above was the case.

Let's not go nuts! I think there's plenty custom to support three gay bars, but four? I dunno if that'd be economically viable...

Well of course there would be less in Taboo but surely that would only be good because then u might stand a chance of getting near the bar. I know lots of gay people who don't go on the scene and i think one of the main reasons is lack of variety. Whan Taboo opened up lots of gay people came out of the woodwork cos it was different than loafers i really believe that when more gay venues open upmore and more people will start going on the scene. I mean a main reason that lots of people give for not going on the scene is that its too small!

I've heard it wasn't a "property developer" who shut down Taboo but Health and Safety.

This thread was supposed to be nice sedna, there's enough bitching and false rumours on other threads!

The topic was meant to be for people to say nice things about Taboo, but that said, I wouldnt be surprised if what he said was true. And its not bitching. The place was a fire trap. the ceiling was leaking. The toilets were definately a health hazard and the stairs were a death trap, if someone triped theyd have broken their neck and went flying out the glass window. There was no ventilation. Someone once told me that people used to piss and get sick into the fire place. and as for the sound system? I think my eardrums have been permanently damaged.
That said, Taboo was a great idea when it started, but it needed to be expanded. Now with Instinct on the way, things can only get better.

Sedna, Fact. A whole block of property encompasing Johnson & Perrot, Irish Examiner, Taboo, Vodaphone is going to get demolished and developed.... Nothing to do with health & safety
jc
25th March 2004, 06:36 PM
I heard it was the Examiner Office bought the entire block.
Also that the licence for the pub expired and Mary could'nt afford to
renew it.
Who knows. There will always be rumours flying around with varying stories so lets just put a lid on Taboo and look forward to Instinct.
Farewell Taboo!

JC - Licences don't expire. Health & Safety issues are easy to fix.
Obviously the property was sold and the purchasers wanted vacant possession. She either had a rental agreement which could be terminated very quickly or a decent lease whereby she was given a pot of money to 'shag off'.
Would be very surprised if TCH bought the lot.

I dont think we'll ever hear the real reason Capo. Give it a few months and it will probably reopen as another type of pub. Years from now people will be posting here saying [whatever it becomes named] was once a gay pub!
