View Full Version : Bad GCN review of Gaycork.com

Hi all,

This months GCN has a unfair and unresearched review of gaycork.com.

It goes along the lines of-

Beyond the usual personals, forums and news feeds, you'll find a small but informative section for Cork's gay directory - gay friendly businesses bars clubs etc. No section for accommodation though

Anyone with common sense can see how unfair and wrong (like we do have accommodation info) that review is.

They then in turn give high praise to other Dublin sites who also have "the usual personals, forums and news feeds"

We hope to draft a letter to GCN editor about this and will also post the same on their forums (BTW they used the same forums as gaycork.com)

So when that letter is drafted we will ask for you support with it.
More tomorrow on this...

Fuck 'em!! GCN has long been a paper about Gay Irish Issues, for gay Dublin men only. This is by far and away the most user-friendly and entertaining site I know of. Shower of Within-The-Pale Sycophantic Sauna-Whores, may their cocaine habits dry up and drop off.

Fume.

It is actually cringingly embarassing for The GCN how biased it is. I expected better journalism from a leading gay national newspaper/magazine. Unfortunately once again it has proven itself to be totally Dublincentric.

It blatantly promotes all the other Dublin websites and turns a blind eye to the their shortcomings while it nit-picks at Cork's gay websites.

GayCork Review
Beyond the usual personals, forums and news feeds, you'll find a small but informative section for Cork's gay directory - gay friendly businesses, bars, clubs etc. No section for accomodation though.

QueerID Review
Beautiful, simple design, regular updates, tons of interesting sections and articles, nice and easy to use personals section, intelligent reviews, and an up-to-date what's on section for Dublin.

Firstly there is a section for accomodation on GayCork http://www.gaycork.com/directory/accommodation.html

GayCork also has a nice and easy-to-use personals section. Why did they omit that from their review.

Funnily the sum total of the personal ads on QueerID is only 12! GayCork's Men Seeking Men alone has an average of 15 ads per page. There are 41 pages that can be accessed. So the average sum total of personal ads is 615 and there are more pages archived. This is proof of ease of usability. Why did they ignore that. I wonder did they actually look at the site atall.

And when did you ever hear the word 'beautiful' used to describe a website. You usually here the words 'crisp', 'clean' ,'sharp' 'efficient' or maybe 'cutting-edge' but calling a website beautiful is like calling an ATM machine beautiful. It's plane techno-fetishism. It would be more aptly put if the reviewer wrote QueerID's design makes me hard.

On behalf of QueerID, may I say I also was very surprised by the review of GayCork, which in my opinion is Ireland's best queer website.

This topic is not about bashing QueerID, in fact its an excellant website and we get along very well with the QueerID webmasters/designers.

What we are amazed by is unfair & unresearched GCN review of GayCork.com.

A letter is currently being drafted, and we wil post it here in due course.

Hey - what about letting JC write the letter ? Would give us a good laff and GCN could enjoy a letter on an intellectual par with their own journalism.

Ah go on.

For god sake, why must we always clone our heroes and use them in our armies? Can't we just let them in peace?

i wont write it cos i really dont care what they think of gay cork! they're obviously mis-informed! what matters is the users like it.. not some editor of a magazine!

Apologies if my post comes accross a QueerID bashing as I like the sites' design and content. Was just showing how their review was a stark contrast to GayCorks.

for a free magazine it seems to have a very stuck up attitude

I think this is a shockingly unprofessional review by GCN. I am drafting my own letter to the editor at the moment, but I feel the letter Admin is drafting should be signed by as many representatives of gay Cork as possible (that's the city not the website) i.e. Loafers, The Other Place, Linc, SGMHP etc.

Hi all,

This months GCN has a unfair and unresearched review of gaycork.com.

Have just stumbled across this thread and feel that I must point out that, although it was over a year ago and my memory of the article is hazy:

(1) The brief was to review any gay-related Website of artistic or content-based value

(2) I am not "Dublin-based" and the article did not suggest that I am. Don' assume so much!

Yes at the time, I was pretty irked over that article, esp. since gaycork.com was the first of a generation of new gay websites in Ireland.

We have the one of the oldest gay forums (well before gaire, queerid, gcn), where as you said"the usual personals, forums and news feeds"

We also always had an accommodation information & classifieds, where as you said, "No section for accommodation though".

It was just a badly researched review, and if you spent more time on this website you would have seen that!

Also as a twist on this story, I've since been asked to be the new gcn.ie webmaster. A post I gladly accepted!

Ohh the irony, I know! [:-D]
