So Melodifestivalen is going to be changed for next year. 15 wildcards and 2 web wildcards.
From ESCToday.com (http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/15994?rss)
Changes in Melodifestivalen 2011 announced
Today national broadcaster SVT announced some changes for the national selection Melodifestivalen 2011. The changes come after Sweden for the first time ever missed the final of the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo.
The first change is that foreign composers are now invited to take part of the competition. They have to participate together with at least one Swedish composer but has previously been forbidden to take part at all. The pre-selection jury, that earlier years have chosen 28 of the competing 32 songs will now only choose 15. SVT has in addition to these 15 the right to specially invite and select 15 songs and acts as wild cards against previous years' only 4. "This is a big change for us. Earlier we have only had 4 wild cards, now we can be much more active in the process." says Christer Björkman, Swedish head of Delegation and Competition Producer of Melodifestivalen in a press release.
Last year's web wildcard competition on SVT's home page was a huge success according to SVT and therefore 2 acts instead of one will be chosen this way in the 2011 contest, thus completing the 32 acts. "We are keeping the dream to become a star over night alive", says Christer Björkman. There are no known changes in the format of 4 qualifying semifinals, 1 Second Chance Contest and a big final in the Ericsson Globe Arena. Neither have any changes regarding the voting system been announced.

This was the best Irish result in years, plus RTE have shown a renewed interest in actually hosting the competition. They get a lot of attention when they announce they will go through every year, so they like to leave it until September/October before they confirm.

Personally i would see it as a very bad thing.
We've tried novelty; it didn't work. They can't sing and they can't dance very well. Childish jumping around on stage with breathless 'vocals' is not how to win Eurovision anymore. The only country they might pick up votes from is the UK, purely because they are known there. But we'll need way more than that.
It should be all about the song. That is paramount, not the dubious celebrity of the singers.

Ah yes Jedward for Eurovison they might be joining such prestigious artists as The Mullans, Gary O'Shaughnessy,Mickey Harte,Chris Doran,Donna and Joe and Dervish, who? who? who? and who? and of course lets not forget Dustin.
They were all vile

I agree. Dustin went down like a lead balloon, and I would also consider Donna and Joe as a "novelty act"[:''] I'm still miffed that Dustin beat Leona Daly in the heats as her song was really good and contemporary. They should have brought her back the following year at least instead of sending out that Black Daisy rubbish[X-(]

I remember reading about this and cringed so much it hurt. Unfortunately we're at a stage we're damned if we do and damned if we don't as regards what we do in the competition. Both the novelty and more traditional ballads don't seem to be working. Personally it should all be about the song and we've had some great songs in the past.

Strangely, i've just seen a piece on BBC Newsround (news programme for children) and they say Jedward are in line to represent Ireland in this year's Eurovision - they have to beat 4 other acts in a sing-off.
What is this? RTÉ haven't announced any line-up yet have they? Why is today full of Jedward-Eurovision news? Is their publicist just trying to keep them in the news by releasing aspirational rumours? It's all a little odd.

Its a 50/50 vote, even if Jedward get the full public vote then they need the full jury vote as who ever is second by the public will more than likely win with the combine Jury votes. Those Juries hate jedward, they do

Don't forget to vote in the Kate Ryan award. We want this award to go to the country that you think should have made it to the final each year but did not qualify. A lot of us here feel that Belgium’s Kate Ryan should have qualified to the final in the 2006 competition (we suspect that Schlager Diva Carola may have sabotaged Kate’s act in an act of vengeance for using the blessed Stormvind machine) and as such we want to acknowledge the good work of the one country that you lot out there think should have made it to the grand finale.
Basically this is open to all to vote in and we will keep it open until January 20th. The entrants are all the countries that did not win a place into the final. So should Slovakia snuck in? Finland finished first? Or were The Netherlands nearly there? Only you can decide the winner so get voting folks

Eurosong mystery act is revealed
The identity of the mystery act taking part in 'Eurosong 2011' on 'The Late Late Show' next Friday, 11 February, has been revealed.
BLING - Marilyn Bane, Tammy Browne, Shane Creevey and Gari Deegan - will perform the previously announced track 'Shine On' on next week's show. The song has been written by Patrick Mahoney and the group is mentored by Willie Kavanagh.
Ronan Hardiman is mentoring Don Mescall, who is performing 'Talking with Jennifer' (written by Ronan Hardiman and Don Mescall).
Caroline Downey Desmond is the mentor for Jedward, who will sing 'Lipstick' (written by Dan Priddy, Lars Jensen and Martin Larson).
Liam Lawton is the mentor for The Vard Sisters, who will compete with a song called 'Send Me An Angel' (written by Liam Lawton).
Nikki Kavanagh's mentor is David Hayes and her song is 'Falling' (written by Christina Schilling and Camilla).
I can't say i'm trembling with excitement about 'Bling' but shur we'll see! And we'll see a small bit tonight. There's a behind-the-scenes documentary presented by Marty Whelan on RTÉ One tonight where there'll be a sneak preview of the five songs.

According to allkindsofeverything.ie, RTÉ have changed the voting procedure of this year's Eurosong final as one of the five mentors asked for Jedward's diqualification because of their breach of the competition's rules. The winner of Eurosong 2011 will be selected by a combination of televoting (33%) and jury's choice (67%).
Yesterday, snippets of the five participating songs in this year's Irish national selection, were revealed by RTÉ during their broadcast of Eurosong - The Players, a special documentary presenting the five mentors and their attempt to find Ireland's next Eurovision winner.
As esctoday.com previously announced, Jedward, the biggest name in this year's Eurosong, might face disqualification as a 30 seconds snippet of their song Lipstick was published by the Universal label on Amazon. This is against the official rules of Eurosong 2011 and one of the five mentors already asked for their disqualification from the competition.
In order to solve this situation, RTÉ have decided to change the voting procedure and unlike last year, the regional juries' choice will have a bigger impact on the outcome of the voting act (67%). People's opinion will count less and will have a 33% impact on the final result.

WOW we havent had this much interest in the irish selection in ages !!! Its brilliant !!!!
I watched the RTE programme on saturday night and tbh I really think its s 2 horse race.Jedward and Nikki all the way.
Don Mescall and The Vard sisters are both lovley songs in their own right but I dont think either have any place in modern day Eurovision.”Bling” dear Jesus….not at the races at all !!!!
Now Jedwards is quite “Brittanyesque” while Nikki is quite “Rhianne/Cheryl Coleesque” Nikki reminds me of Safura and Drip drop last year.
I feel that Nikki’s presentation is vital…its a total change for an irish Eurovision song but I think for the live show she needs to really POP on stage…..Sex it up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!just go for it…
Jedwards is total pop but very instant….If they can pull off a decent vocal (which in the RTE studios is always difficult)
I am sure their presentation will be eye catching then I feel they will be the act to beat.
This palava about the 30 second clip seems to me a little bit of sour grapes but having said that the rules were broken….I dont know …..I just think that it could all blow up on the “giver outers” (is that even a word / words) faces …..
Either way it will be interesting.
I am a fan of the Jedward “product” rather then their vocal ability …Will Europe get them if the win….maybe…..They do stand out on screen….And in all fairness….Lena was no great vocalist was she ?….but the song was very current and instant.

Ok so judging by the previews, it really is a two horse race between Niki and Jedward. The other 3 songs sound too dated.
I didn't realise Niki had such a good voice and with decent styling/staging she could really stand out. Her song is a stellar effort and I think a safe bet to qualify and finish in a respectable position(anything above the bottom 3 being a start at this stage [:''])
Jedward's song isn't as bad as I was expecting it to be but it's risky and impossible to tell how it would go down in Europe. Big flop or surprise hit, neither outcome would surprise me.
Alas, I think Niki will suffer the same fate as the lovely Leona Daly did in 2007 and lose out to the comedy act.

Dare I say it.......am a little disappointed with "Falling"..........I dont know why I just was feeling very optimistic about it after hearing the clip last week.........It will have to be SOME performance to stand out.
Very very true about the Drip Drop similarity.....
May god forgive me I thought I would never say this but I think it will be
Jedward
I agree. "Falling" is still a good song and Nikki's voice is brilliant but there is just something missing[:-?] I think a proper middle 8 section before the inevitable key change would have really helped. Just sounds a little too samey right through.
Jedward's song is undeniably catchy, and dare I say it sounds the most polished[:-O ] Trying to perform it live though is another matter entirely.
Tomorrow night should be interesting.

For jedward, Get rid of the yelping and fix the verses and it is a bloody great song.

I'm not unhappy Jedward won. It's a very good song and crazily catchy.
I was rooting for Nikki. In fact, i think those of us watching in Admin and Shiva's all voted for her (those who cared anyway). A proper song, excellent performance, ruined by the two dancers, as Mairéad Farrell rightly pointed out.
I loved the Vard Sisters song but it could never win, and rightly so.
Bling were quite good. Not an awful song and i liked the set up.
Don Mescall was just....yawn. Great voice though.
PS, Cheryl looked fab. Brian Kennedy has got buff (but still ugly) and Mairéad Farrell was a massive surprise; i like her a lot more now.

I want to kick those dancers in the face!!!!![X-(] so annoying they ruined it. The song was only OK. She is beautiful with a great voice but would be totally out of her debth in Eurovision if thats all she brought to the table[:-(] She would be lost in a sea of blandness

So there was a rash of countries chosing tonight and most of the songs are just woeful - Iceland did not choose Yohanna instead going for the sympathy vote for a composer who died 3 weeks ago. Jedwards job just became so much easier.

Spectacular screw up in Iceland, the songwriter had died very suddenly 2 weeks ago so the TV station gave the song an automatic through to the final where it won the public vote - no juries in Iceland, but I suspect there will be next year, and yea it will make Jedwards job easier.

This is so not a Eurovision song. Who in their right mind would send an opera singer to the Eurovision (even if not bad looking and self-proclaimed younger tenor in the world)? I'd rather have a turkey.
The only thing I like about that song is that it's promoting a regional language (Corsican if my hear isn't mistaken [:-?]). Then again, that'll probably mean France will lose votes in the other French speaking countries... God, they really don't want to pay for organising it [:-D].

Define a Eurovision song? We have seen a huge diversity in the types of songs both entering and either doing very well and winning over the last few years :) Lordi won with metal, and since then we get 2-3 metal songs a year. Popera came into force 2 years ago with 6 songs that year.
And yes it is Corsican :) This song will do fantastically well this year, it is different and it is good. Something which currently is lacking in a lot of the songs that are out right now, nearly all of them are going for rehashes or complete overhauls - so far out of the 38 (of 43) entries chosen only 5 have been confirmed as the final versions - yes this year is full of Turkeys, but France is not one of them :) Have a little pride for the mother land mand :)

I'll rant and complain as much as I want, it's the second thing French people do best[X-(]. And you're lucky I'm not ranting about the public not having its say in the choice of the song[B-)]. At least now I'm happy I recognised the language and understood some of it.
It may yet grow on me, but I find it a bit depressing -which is what I meant by not a Eurovision song to me...but you're the expert on that point.

From what I've seen it would have to be the plank of wood with the biggest ego ever.
I'm now laughing at some of the Corsican reactions I've read: apparently his pronunciation isn't good[:-))]... So, add to rant: try to promote regional language for the sake of folklore (and possibly good conscience) but be sure to send someone from a totally different region who has no clue what he's saying and just mumbles away. In the mean time do your best to reduce the use of local languages in the country. Ahh, I know why I am not living in France anymore.

I'm really only ever aware of the Eurovision in a low-key way....and that's not going to change. I like some of the tunes...but never really bother learning who sings what. There seems to be no getting away from this song though:

The tune is fine....although there're a few notes that just don't sit right with me.
The lyrics really do my head in though...
I can understand them fine, I just find them....well....pathetic. I guess I'm counterculture or something, but there's a little stab in my head anytime I hear someone going on and on about wanting to be popular, listing all the stuff they'd do when they are popular, but no actual plan for how to achieve popularity....I like a story in the lyrics. And the story there is akin to that person who tells you week after week, every chance they get, how they're gonna get even with someone but never do a thing!! GAH!!!
I wouldn't have gone as far as the director of the video above and have Eric beaten up though. That's just mean!

They have announced that the running for the voting order won't be decided until all the votes are in on the final night.
This way they can space out the voting to give it more suspense. I like it, I like it a lot. The votes will be unchanged just when they announce the countries, space out the 12s so to speak.

Huh? I don't understand that?
When the time for voting is over, the results are known backstage before any voting is announced with the whole "Here are the results of the (insert country's name here) Jury" or whatever.
Rather than go by a predetermined order the voting will be announced in an order that will try to draw out the tension....keep the scoring closer so that revealing the outright winner takes a while.
It's kinda boring when you can tell who's going to win after the first five juries have announced, so it's a ploy for holding the audience's attention so they don't just change channel.

Alright, I understand it now.
I see what they're trying to do, and there are plus points to it; but I'm still not convinced of its full merits. It comes across as a little contrived. Won't they take ages formulating who will vote in what order? Will they perhaps say "We'll hold back all of France's top votes till later to make it extra exciting towards the end"?
I can't think of any of the last few years where the voting was 'boring'. Sometimes it became obvious who the winner was, but it never became certain until the last few voters. Having said that, I can see what they're trying to do, and if it makes Eurovision a more must-see spectacle then it's all good. I'll wait and see how it works in May.

Well they will calculate it 10 minutes before they announce the votes, with computers they can do anything these days :)
But the one thing people do love and myself included is a tight voting race, it makes it more exciting - at least until there is a clear winner :) I think its a great move, plus it's not like they kept it secret so it's not a conspiracy.

There are 3 web programmes on the Eurovision on the RTE iPlayer, they are only being shown online and not on the station.
You can find them, along with The Secret History of the Eurovision on the following link:

The Secret History of the Eurovision was absolutely excellent! It was really interesting to find out that the Soviet Union banned the eurovision as they saw it as western propoganda and a threat but people still tuned in illegally, in countries like Estonia and East Germany risking jail sentences! :-)
And then the irony that in 2008, Russia spent the most money ever on hosting the contest!

They sound good. It's clear and pretty much in tune.
I'd like if their dancing/movement was tighter and more in sync with each other. It was a little loose. But, I'm sure they'll work on it before next Thursday.
Edit: I really like the start, with the camera presumably switching between the one standing and facing the crowd and the one lying down facing the ceiling.

Jedward are still ahead on the Google Predictor!
http://www.google.com/landing/eurovision/index.html
While their odds keep shortening, in the past 3days they have been 20/1, 16/1 and now 14/1.
They are definitely making an impact already and arguably receiving the most media attention with Germany's best selling newspaper BILD having just done a feature on them as well. Will Germany give us 12points? :-)

Right what are you smoking?
There are no live animals allowed on stage for any act, it is not targeted at Jedward.
Secondly the 2 boys are jumping about the place like rabid wolves as they were earlier today, doing somersaults on stage and everything. They have their second rehearsals tomorrow. About 3 weeks ago one of them sprained his foot on stage but it turns out that he is fine.
Thirdly stop reading The Sun, they started these rumors weeks ago :P

My thoughts on tonight's songs:
Poland: their best ever entry (although that doesn't say much). I love it. It's a great song and i hope it qualifies.
Norway: happy, bouncy and catchy. Should do pretty well.
Albania: a bit screechy and painful. The chorus is alright but I'm not a lover of it.
Armenia: the more I hear the more I like it. It's shallow and cheesy, but undeniable catchy.
Turkey: a good rocky-type song, but not my cup of tea. It'll easily qualify though.
Serbia: a retro effort but it lacks substance.
Russia: a handsome man and a good song. A bit simplistic though and unoriginal. Will qualify.
Switzerland: a nice, slight ditty but it will probably get lost in the mix.
Georgia: don't like it. Too hardcore for me!
Finland: very like Belgium last year so it should do pretty well. It's soft and cheery with no dramatics.
Malta: unorginal, silly pop song. He's the gayest singer in it this year. Won't qualify.
San Marino: too dull and bland to stand out.
Croatia: another unorginal song. I must say I do like it but I'm not sure it's good enough to qualify.
Iceland: off-putting folksy tripe.
Hungary: my joint-favourite song of 2011. A proper, classy pop song. Should do very well, which is a first for Hungary.
Portugal: appalling 'comic' entry. It should be booed off stage.
Lithuania: boring ballad. Shouldn't trouble the judges.
Azerbaijan: another strong entry from Azerbaijan. It's catchy and classy, if a little unorginal.
Greece: disappointing effort. Terrible rapping and dull operatic-type singing. It doesn't work.

For some reason the Hungarian entry was going completely over my head so I just listened to it there. I can very much see this winning come Saturday night and the odds for it are quite tempting too..might be worth throwing a tenner on[:-?]
Meanwhile, it is great to see Ireland's odds continue to shorten. Jedward are now 5th favourites at oddschecker:) Estonia is holding strong too but unfortunately Norway has taken quite a dive.
