I've been a huge fan of Ms. Amos since I was little more than a twinkle in my daddy's eye, well maybe a wee bit bigger.
She is truly the best, unsung, most underrated Diva in the world? And gay-friendly to boot!
What do other people think of her?
N.B. SHADOWS REQUESTS THAT IF YOUR OPINION OF MS. AMOS IS NEGATIVE, FAIR ENOUGH; BUT PLEASE DO NOT BE CRUEL.

I first noticed Tori Amos when I saw her on the cover of Q magazine with Bjork and PJ Harvey, two of my favourite artists. The three of them are friends and had talked about collaborating musically, so they did a joint interview, cool pictures too.
I like Amos' first big album Little Earthquakes and used to go thru phases of listening to it a LOT. Winter and Silent All These Years are really beautiful and moving songs. From the next album Under The Pink I really liked Pretty Good Year and Past The Mission (her duet with Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, I'm a big NIN fan anyway). To be honest I haven't followed her career much after that but I have some friends who are fanatically obsessive Toriphiles, follow her around on tour and collect every bit of memorabilia they can find etc. Actually my mum likes her too.

Im a huge Tori Amos fan, have all of her albums. Lyrically she is amazing, vocally she is amazing. Since her second album Little Earthquakes she hasn't been afraid to experiment with music and although she is mostly known for her piano and harpiscord backing, which she plays herself, she has evolved into mainstream dance and heavy rock. Her newest album Scarlett Walk takes us back to Under the pink style where its the lyrics of the songs are whats most prominent. My fav Tori song has to be from her album 'Strange little girls' Song, Real Men. One of the lines in that song always cracks me up, it goes, "Don't call me a faggott now, not unless you are a friend," Metaphor for life. Lol

I am also a Tori Amos fan.
I love her lyrics and her music.
I also love her!
She has become almost an imaginary friend.
I have all her albums except for the Y Cant Tori Read one... which I must get.
I intend to meet her one day. I feel I know the woman.
I love the way she writes in anagrams in her lyrics. I love trying to work out the cryptic meanings of her words.
Tori Amos rocks!
I have been to Kinsale so often just to see if she is walking around. I did find out where her house is tho.

[ ;)] As for, Y KANT TORI READ it's available upstairs in Vibes & Scribes, and on-line. Can be a bit pricey though ... and it's not that great. But, of course, if you're a Tori fan it's a must!

Her newest CD is out! It's a collection of her previous work (a best of album, really) with 4 new songs, and also available in a limited edition box with bonus DVD. Definitely buy it on CD WOW, it's the cheapest, between €12 - €17 compared to local shops, where it's more than €30.
Highly recommended for Amos fans or new listeners.

Just to say that I too am a huge Tori Amos fan and have been since her first album. I love her lyrics, her way of seeing things and her amazing talents - vocal and instrumental. I was also really happy when I found out she was a great friend of one of my favourite authors Neil Gaiman. I have Y kant Tori read and a ton of bootlegs and live recordings of stuff she's done.
I got to see her in glasgow touring with Streange little girls around two years ago. Does anyone know if she'll be touring this album?
My fave songs of hers - hmm per album I suppose would be
Little Earthquakes - precious things (I love the rage in this song!) + winter (so beautiful) + (sometimes) silent all these years and crucify (the best lyrics - got enough guilt to start my own religion!)
Under the Pink - space dog (I love the end of this song) + yes anastacia (this song is really atmospheric and epic)
Boys for Pele - caught a lite sneeze (it's like perfection, in a song)
From the Choir Girl Hotel - iieee (this is such a great + trippy song)
To Venus and Back - Bliss (Such a cool song!) and Sugar on the live cd (This shows me how amazing her vocals are I ****ing love this song)
Strange little Girls - I don't like mondays (i really think she's makes this song her own)
Scarlets Walk - A sorta fairytale (again really epic and beautiful) and Taxi Ride (a really beautiful song)
I haven't listened to her new album enough but I like that she rerecorded her songs and didn't just copy them from their old albums
Also songs not on her albums that are really good are
Love Song - cover of a Cure song I think
Honey - absolutely amazing!
Landslide - yep the one the dixie chicks covered also
Famous Blue Raincoat - a cover of Leonard Cohen's song
In her Y Kant Tori Read album I really like Floating City for some reason???

The divine Ms. Amos is shortly to be seen in the Julia Roberts movie "Mona Lisa Smile" (opening in Ireland this weekend), playing 'The Wedding Singer'. There'll be two new songs of her's featured in the movie (and on the soundtrack) - "Murder, He Says" and "You Belong To Me".

Scandinavian online vendor cdon.com has two new Tori Amos entries that clearly seem to indicate that there will be both a new CD of live material and a DVD of live performances released this Spring. They have these future releases listed as separate entries. First of all, they have a listing for a new album by Tori called "Live - The Scarlet Sessions", which they say will be available on May 5, 2004. Secondly, they have a listing for new DVD called The Scarlet Sessions which they also say will be available on May 5, 2004. This is most assuredly the same DVD that Musictap.net told us about on March 11, 2004, when they claimed there would be a new DVD from Tori released in the U.S. on May 4, 2004 called "Welcome to Sunny Florida". These two sources do not agree on the name of the DVD, and I do question the May 5, 2004 date. (I think May 3 or 4, 2004 is more likely), but all these sources make it clear something new is coming in both CD and DVD form!

Little Earthquakes, was released in January 1992, featuring the moving singles Silent All These Years and Crucify, as well as the disturbing a capella Me And A Gun, which recounts her rape by an armed 'fan' when she drove him home after one of her concerts. The song became an unofficial anthem for rape prevention groups across the nation.
Dear Friends,
Since the song Me And A Gun came out in 1991, you've been sending me letters, poems, and drawings telling me of your experiences, your tears, the hole in your heart. You've talked with me about healing and transmuting the pain into wisdom -- and then, just when you think "Wow here I am in the clear blue sky", all of a sudden, Bang.
Crashing.
Something comes up like bubbles to the surface, bringing up another part of ourselves that has been silent -- that we were in the dark about.
Lurking.
Nightmares aren't my favorite thing. I want to feel safe period. My soul wants to feel safe not terrorized.
A teacher of mine recently said to me, "Many people agree collectively to not think and feel things that deep down they know are true. Nightmares", she said, "are alarm bells saying we don't agree to Pretending We Feel Safe when we don't." So my nightmares are becoming little clues to what my mind can't hide from my heart. I hope RAINN begins to help you with your nightmares.
I received a letter from a 13 year old girl in Paris whose stepfather has been molesting her for years. She wrote "If I had known a phone number which would have been able to help, I certainly would have dialed it." So, we can go on being blind and dumb You don't have to put the message with the help phone number out now. Maybe you'll never do it, because of different reasons. You won't be to blame for it. But, I want you to never forget that every day someone loses their dignity.
Love and support,
TORI AMOS
Sorry..I can't find much more.
Mr.Intentional
17th March 2004, 03:58 PM
"I don't talk about the details because I can't, but it's freeing to sing that song [Me And A Gun]. I have to go in a trance to sing it. ... It gets exhausting singing it. But there's so much going on that nobody talks about, and I just found that out with myself after so many years of not talking."
-- Tori; The Washington Post, March 22, 1992
"I'll never talk about it at this level again, but let me ask you. Why have I survived that kind of night, when other women didn't? How am I alive to tell you this tale when he was ready to slice me up? In the song I say it was Me and a Gun but it wasn't a gun. It was a knife he had. And the idea was to take me to his friends and cut me up, and he kept telling me that, for hours. And if he hadn't needed more drugs I would have been just one more news report, where you see the parents grieving for their daughter. And I was singing hymns, as I say in the song, because he told me to. I sang to stay alive. Yet I survived that torture, which left me urinating all over myself and left me paralyzed for years. That's what that night was all about, mutilation, more than violence through sex. I really do feel as though I was psychologically mutilated that night and that now I'm trying to put the pieces back together again. Through love, not hatred. And through my music. My strength has been to open again, to life, and my victory is the fact that, despite it all, I kept alive my vulnerability."
"I wrote it after I saw Thelma and Louise. And that had, humm, I had to let out all that incredible hurt and anger. The anger came. The song was written in the afternoon that I had seen Thelma and Louise and completed. It it had always been a capella. And when I started writing it, it was as if the blinded was on. I knew exactly what I wanted to say. I mean, I was almost in a trace writing that song. I was back there in that experience, and yet, another part of me was guiding it on. I felt like I was protected writing it, when it was over, when I had looked at what I had written. And the hardest part is performing it every night because, although I know I'm safe, a part of me has to go to that place to sing it. And what this whole process has taught me is, I'm not a victim. Although when I go in and sing it every night, there's a certain energy I bring to make it very real and then after the performance is over I can go and have an ice cream and have a life and say, 'this is over. I can talk about it and I have love in my life.' And it's really important to get to that stage."

I'm sorry I appear to have offended people, I forget how dearly some people take pop stars to their hearts! I should not accuse her "rape" as being a publicity stunt. "Irreversible" is a harrowing experience and will certainly make you think twice about throwing around the word.
By the way, Mr. International, thanks for the updates, the forthcoming CD/DVD has me excited too.
I bought the "Mona Lisa Smile" soundtrack. Her two tracks are brilliant. The rest of the CD isn't that great, though it's arguably the gayest soundtrack out at the moment, with the likes of Elton John, Celine Dion, Lisa Stansfield, et all also contributing.

I met Tori Amos before in Wicklow. She was recording in Delganey....i was at a BBQ...next thing she hops over the wall!

She hopped over the wall?

Are you serious?
Was this in 96?
Did she say anything interesting?

well if you look at the album that has "Professinal Widow" on it...you should see a credit for Bagpipes for Michael Deegan on it for some song (no idea which one)... When i lived in Dublin, he was one of the guys I shared a place with. He was playing the bagpipes at this charity BBQ i was at. She heard him. Hopped over the wall and asked him to go into studio so she could sample it. She didn't say much. She was chatty in a small talk kind of way...very friendly and small in stature.

This is my favourite thread.
I think I'll just live here.
I downloaded a live version of Horses just there..
But she does this little improv as an intro to the song.
She ALWAYS does improvs as intros.
But on this version she sings some of it during the song.
It's an amazing version.
From 96.

Mr.Intentional
31st March 2004, 01:48 PM
oOo..
I love that too.
I love what she did to it on the Pele tour too.
She used the harpsichord and came up with a new melody.
She changed it for every tour..
I have a different version from the Strange Little Girls tour.
But I think the best version was..
When she used the Upright Piano like in Under The Pink.
Rec

I saw her in glasgow for her SLG tour two years ago and the first song was 97 bonnie and clyde, and in the playlist she sang Etienne from her first album and an amazing version of Cloud on My tongue.
Mr.Intentional
31st March 2004, 02:07 PM
Did she perform New Age?
She always started with Bonnie & Clyde on the Strange Little Girl's tour.
Just like she always started with Wampum Prayer & A Sorta Fairytale..
Or just A Sorta Fairytale on the Scarlet tour.

Mr.Intentional

Yay KTS!!!
I adore Raining Blood.
It's so deiciously dark.
New Age is my favourite song on that album.
It's an album that's kinda frowned upon though.
I think it's because it's not your typical Tori cover version..thingy.
She's the best doing covers.
Like..y'know the way most artists cover songs to make them sound better?
Or make them sound exactly like the original?
Tori doesn't do that..
She interprets them..and makes them her own.
Like all those piano pieces on the album..
Most of them are her own..like Raining Blood.
Could you be further away from the original?

Amnesiac - any album is amazing - the most accessible for beginners would be Little Earthquakes with shared second place going to Scarlet's Walk and Under The Pink - IMHO - the others may disagree with me - what do ye guys think?

I love Scarlet's Walk..but..
I'd go with something like Little Earthquakes or even Under The Pink..
Heavy albums would be Choirgirl..

They're very dark..
So it's like...
Scarlet's Walk
Little Earthquakes..
Or..
Under The Pink.
In my opinion anyway.

Mr.Intentional
8th April 2004, 05:59 PM
I've heard of it.
Epic Records released a special bonus CD called Scarlet Stories - Commentary By Tori Amos. The CD is a track by track commentary, spoken by Tori, for each of her songs on the album, Scarlet's Walk. Tori's "stories" provides a backdrop for each of the songs from the perspective of the album's character, Scarlet, and from Tori, herself (these being separate things).
The Scarlet Stories CD was obtainable only as a bonus disc coupled with the purchase of the album (the standard issue, as opposed to the Limited Edition). One US promotion titled, "Get Tori as a Gift -- Get a Gift From Tori", entailed buying two copies of Scarlet's Walk from a participating indie music retailer. This version of the "Stories" CD came in the full case as shown above. Another promotion in Canada involved pre-ordering the album at HMV.com, where you would then receive a special 2-CD versino of Scarlet's Walk that included "Scarlet Stories" within, rather than in separate packaging. Many people who ordered from HMV.com not only received this 2-CD version of the album with the "Stories" CD, but also received ANOTHER copy of the "Stories" in a separate, clear thin jewel case.
This CD is not avaible for purchase at any stores, but may be found being auctioned off on Ebay.

Hey Mr. International, do you remember this Tori Amos song, "Do It Again"? Do you happen to know what single it is a B-side on? I can't remember ...
In the mornin' you go gunnin'
For the man who stole your water
And you fire 'till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
And they put you on the street
Let's go
Well you know she's no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two-timer
And you're sure you're at the end
Then you love a little wild one
But she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'
You'll be on your knees tomorrow
You go back, Jack
You go back
Do it again
Wheel's turnin' round and round
You go back, Jack
Do it again
Now your swear and kick and beg us
That you're not a gambling man
Then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards will make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table
You go back, Jack
Do it again
Wheel turning round and round
You go back, Jack
Do it again
Back you go
Come on to me
Wheel turning round
Beautifully
Wheel turning round

Do It Again - Steely Dan
I love it!
it's four in the morning, the end of december
i'm writing you now just to see if you're better
new york is cold, but i like where i'm living
there's music on clinton street all through the evening.
i hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
you're living for nothing now, i hope you're keeping some kind of record.
yes, and jane came by with a lock of your hair
she said that you gave it to her
that night that you planned to go clear
did you ever go clear?
ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
you'd been to the station to meet every train
and you came home without lili marlene
and you treated my woman to a flake of your life
and when she came back she was nobody's wife.
well i see you there with the rose in your teeth
one more thin gypsy thief
well i see jane's awake --
she sends her regards.
and what can i tell you my brother, my killer
what can i possibly say?
i guess that i miss you,
i guess i forgive you
i'm glad you stood in my way.
if you ever come by here, for jane or for me
your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.
yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
i thought it was there for good so i never tried.
and jane came by with a lock of your hair
she said that you gave it to her
that night that you planned to go clear --
sincerely, leonard cohen

I really love the song floating cities but that's caus eit reminds me of my favourite book of all time - Calenture by Storm Constantine cause it has floating cities in it. Other goodies include Etienne, Cool on your Island and Fire on the Side.
In the concert i was at in Glasgow she played Etienne so she does every now and again dip into it - I think she still likes that one and "Cool..."

It finally arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It came in the post from Amazon.com!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm talking about Tori Amos's "Welcome To Sunny Florida", DVD + CD set.
I haven't watched all of the DVD yet but it's good, a full-length concert in Florida (hence the title) plus interviews with Tori, her mother, and lots of other special features. The 6-track bonus CD ("Scarlet's Treasures") is excellent too, with some very catchy songs, the best of them in my opinion probably being "Bug A Martini" (the next 007 movie should use it as its main song!)

P.S. Here's another picture I love of Tori: http://www.music-critic.com/graphics/concerts/toricncrt.gif

Was just reading through this thread after hearing KTS eulogising about the scared Tori over the w/end and was amazed to see Utrecht mentioned! I head over there a few times a year cause I've some friends living there but most people have never heard of it. Indeed it's a nice enough spot nowhere near as touristy as Amsterdam. Might be a small bit bigger than Cork though or at least feels that way.
Haha I agree tis fairly drowned out by the Dam, but that's why the dutch like cause it's less touristy and more "dutch" It's really nice and I'm way more enjoying life there now the weather has cleared up and I'm over my initial workload and able to explore a bit.
Can't wait to get "Welcome to sunny Florida" KTS, I love her live stuff and I've yet to hear the acoustic version of "A Sorta Fairytale" but I much prefer the album version than the radio version where they cut out a good chunk of it.
Was looking thru some songs on my friend's program "Limewire" on the internet the other day and saw some strange collaborations listed but of course couldn't download any of them. It seems the likes of Ani Difranco, Paula Cole, Shaun Colvin and Sarah Mclachlan have all collaborated on songs with Tori.
Does anyone know what they're like?
I also kept seeing this song "Wild Horses" by her but it turned out to be Winter - was it listed under that name in the states or something?
Anyways away I go again..

It's excellent all right. The Bonus CD is amazing, particularly considering it's called "Scarlet's Hidden Treasures", suggesting there's a link between it and "Scarlet's Walk" - but I think the former is better than the latter, even if it is only 6 songs in lent.
Jingle jangle yeah yeah ...
So, any news on Tori touring Ireland this year?
Also, did people realise there's 3 versions of album "Boys for Pele".

I just never got into it. Some of the songs are great but ultimately I felt they were all too similar, still loved the special edition boxing of it though - the DVD, CD, map with lyrics, cute stickers, and polaroids. My favourite Tori album is "Boys For Pele", but really I love them all - except "SW". And even then, I still like it, just not the way I adore all her other albums and singles.
By the way, there's AN INCREDIBLY CHEAP single by Tori available on Amazon.com -
"Jackie's Strength" (from her fourth album, "From the Choirgirl Hotel") - only $3.49 and you get the main song, 2 previously unreleased songs AND it's an enhanced CD so you get 2 music videos too. Highly recommended. For such small change, buy it even if you don't like Tori!!!! :)

Ok, I've listened to it a good few times on my cycle to/from the wilds of Bishopstown every day. Must admit it's pretty good, I'm guessing it's a compilation seeing as there's a lot of different styles on there. Almost a country flavour to some songs e.g. "Mary!" Think my favourite was "Silent All These Years".
Always impresses me when someone is willing to sing with no backing like on "Me And A Gun".
Must listen to a few more albums at some stage to get more of a feel for Tori's music (hint :) ).

Tori is currently recording her new album!
Posted Sun, Jul 18, 2004 - 1:33pm ET | Music
This was reported earlier, but a July 10, 2004 update at Mattchamberlain.com confirms that Tori is currently in the studio in Cornwall recording her new album! At this time we have no details, other than it will likely be released sometime in the first quarter of 2005. We look forward to it!
So far, everything we know about her 2005 tour plans comes from an MSNBC.com interview that Tori did on June 11, 2004. She stated in that interview that she would be touring in 2005, and planned to do the tour in 2 parts. The first part would be in late Winter or early Spring 2005 and would be Tori performing by herself solo, and the second part of the tour would be during summer 2005 with the band if the guys are available. At this time we have no idea where Tori will be touring in 2005. That is all we know, and since there is a long time between then and now, these plans could always change. The Dent will of course let you know additional info as it becomes available in the future.
Pray she comes here..

Update on Tori's book:
From her critically acclaimed 1992 debut Little Earthquakes to the recent smash Scarlet's Walk, Tori Amos has been a formidable force in contemporary music, with one of the most dedicated fan bases around. In Tori Amos: Piece by Piece, the singer herself takes readers beyond the mere facts, explaining the specifics of her creative process—how her songs go from ideas and melodies to recordings and passionately performed concert pieces. Written with acclaimed music journalist Ann Powers, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a firsthand account of the most intricate and intimate details of Amos's life as both a private individual and a very public performing musician. In passionate and informative prose, Amos explains how her songs come to her and how she records and then performs them for audiences everywhere, all the while connecting with listeners all over the world and maintaining her own family life (which includes raising a young daughter). But it is also about how Amos uses her music as a medium to express her unique and fascinating personal history; in short, we see the pieces that make up—as Amos puts it—"the woman we call Tori."
With photos taken especially for this book by the acclaimed photographer Loren Haynes, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a rare treat for both fans and non-fans alike, an inside look at what it's really like being one of the figureheads of contemporary female music.

Tori's drummer Matt Chamberlain comments on Tori's new album in an August 19, 2004 entry on his official web site at mattchamberlain.com. He simply says that he has finished recording on it, thinks it will be her best album to date, and mentioned that they tried to make each song as unique as possible. Sounds intriguing! The album is due sometime during the first quarter of 2005.

And there's a video being made for this single..

It's already getting airplay in the U.S.
I haven't heard it yet.
I'm still gonna wait for something official.

The first review of The Beekeeper:
http://mollyknight.com/beekeeper.html
The Beekeeper will be sold in a soft pak while the regular version should come in a regular jewel case. Also, the special edition package groups the album's 19 songs into 6 different gardens- Roses and Thorns, Herbs and Elixers, The Desert Garden, The Greenhouse, The Orchard and The Rock Garden. To compliment this garden theme the package includes a "Beekeeper" mix of flower and plant seeds. We already knew about the seeds..
