I'm sure everyone's familiar with the 1996 movie "The Birdcage", starring Robin Williams, and a host of other famous actors. It's camp, outrageous, and good fun.
I just saw the original, which I bought on video, "Las Cage Aux Folles (Birds of a Feather)" (1978). It hasn't dated at all and is obviously better than the remake. Surprisingly, it took Hollywood 18 years to make the same movie - it just goes to show tolerance levels and how they differ between France and America. Anyhow, the original is almost entirely the same as the remake (or should that be the other way around) except for some slight changes at the end.
And before the original movie, it was a stage play.
And after the 1996 movie, it became a novelization by my favourite gay author Robert Rodi.
So of this funny story, there's four versions - the best is the 1978 film, the most readily available is the 1996 film. The play is no longer staged, and the novelization has gone out of print.
