Ok...here's a weird one.
was channel hopping today and i stumbled on S4C....
Now in these isles you have English.....but also Irish, Scots Gaelic and Manx to name a few - which are all pretty similar (as is Breton) but where the hell did Welsh come from?
I mean...you can just about make out Manx and Breton (if you remember your Peig Irish) but Welsh is closer to Russian!!!!
Anyone know why ?

Welsh (and cornish and Breton) are classed as p-Celtic languages whereas Irish Gaelic, Scot's Gaelic and Manx are q-Celtic languages. The two divisions are quiet different and I think p is older. Try this url for more information

Go raibh maith agat
in fact - does anyone remember those Irish essays that you had to write in primary school after the school holidays...they always included at least one of the following lines
La brea samhraidh a bhi ann...
Ni raibh aon scamaill sa speir
Rinne mammai ceapri
etc
etc
(fluent Irish speakers - excuse the spelling mistakes, its been a while)

Well, I got an Irish essay to write today about drugs in Irish Society. Think I could get away with starting it like that? Cos I'm drawing a blank.
Nil aon faic eolas agam.
