Ok,
Harry Bo has a car! A nice car! Its a BMW 116i 05 D. Its 6 months old, if that!!
I went to look at changing to a Mini Cooper today... was gonna buy from the same garage that I got the BMW from.
Reason for wanting to change, well the Mini is sexy... REALLY SEXY!
Ok so, got to the garage and looked at the Mini, test drove it, fell in love with it and wanted to buy.
I asked the lovely lady to check out what she could give me on a trade in on my car.
Details,
My car was bought for 31 k less than 6 months ago.
The Mini is 28 K as a demo model (really sexy)
BMW have now offered me 22 K for my 6 month old car..... thats 9 thousand euro of a drop in less than 6 months!!!!!!!
I MEAN - GOD!!!!!!!!!
My bro used to be a car salesman and told me that they offered such a terrible price because its coming to the end of 05, and because they probably had 20 - 30 of the same model that i have and just dont want another, so they make a silly offer hoping that I would feck off.
I have decided not to buy from them, as they are offering WAY too little for my mo mo. And i could get way more selling private.
Anyone else feel like car garages try to screw them????
Let the Ranting begin.........

Get a mini

and so it begins.......
first and foremost - trading a BMW for a Mini Cooper, are you MAD??? dont get me wrong i love the Mini Coopers but not to drive everyday, id go mad bobbing around in a tiny little car like that!!
Car dealerships are just like every other company, out to screw the public.
I bought my car back in March, I really wanted to get a VW golf around the 00 or 01 year. It was a little out of my budget as i wanted to pay for the car outright and not get a loan, so settled on a Ford Focus.
I shopped around A LOT and found VERY similar cars with VERY different prices. One dealership was 2 thousand euro dearer than another dealership for more or less the same car (same make, same model, same year, same milleage, etc etc)
I eventually decided on the one i liked, and just out of curiosity decided to enquire about finance options. What a rip off!!! you end up paying an absolute fortune more for the car. So when i told them id pay cash, i litterally saw € signs go cha ching in his eyes, PLUS i offered to pay cash if he knocked €200 off the price, which he did! however when i was paying by finance it was "really not possible to let this car go for any less" its so true that money talks!
I wont even get started on Insurance, but ill just say that your Insuance should NOT cost a third of the price of the car!!! Damn me for having a penis, being under 25, not having a full licence and its my first car[=;]

Your the fourth person to say that to me today.. maybe u all know somthing I don't......

I paid for mine in cash.. it was orignally 34 k and they dropped to 31 when i said cash... shows how much they can afford to drop price!!!

Ukoda.. I am in the same boat!!! I have a penis too, im under 25, on a provisional licence and all of a sudden im a threat to EVERY person on the road!!!!!!!!! Bollox!

What is it with people nowadays - motor insurance is expensive in Ireland , fact.
How can someone on a provisional licence , male , under 25 expect to get affordable insurance on BMW 116's and MINI Coopers!!!
Get real , get a smaller engined car - I had to drive small motor-bikes and small hatchbacks for years - I love cars and would have loved to be driving about in relatively fast models like MINI coopers & Beemer 116's but I couldn't afford the insurance - but moaning about it ain't gonna solve the problem.
There are plenty of folks out there that can't afford a car at all!
P.S - I don't work for the insurance or car sales industries!

So if a male under 25 on a provisional licence gets a smaller sized engine car they are automatically a safer driver???? and the insurance companys are correct in giving them lower insurance?? GET REAL!
Its beyond me how Ireland lets somebody who has NEVER driven before, fill out a piece of paper and sit into a car and take off!!!! it makes absolutely NO SENSE to me.
It’s the equivalent of giving an Airplane pilot his license letting him sit into a jet and take off without ever having taking a flying lesson. Ludicrous!!!
Insurance prices should be based on your competency as a driver NOT on your gender and age.
And why shouldn’t I expect to get cheaper car insurance?? I have been driving on both my parents cars since I was 17 and have never had a accident, but that doesn’t count for anything

Didn't say that - but a male under 25 on a provisional licence will probably afford the insurance of a smaller engined car rather than a racy BMW/MINI Cooper. Insurance costs also relate to the type of car you drive - more expensive larger engined sportier cars will be dearer to insure. I was speaking about the reality of car insurance costs - I do believe it's unfair though.

I'm not saying you shouldn't - what I was saying is that I can't believe how young people are so shocked when thay can't get affordable insurance for 1.6 sporty , premium cars like Mini Coopers and BMW 116's !!
Complaining about it on this forum isn't gonna get anyone cheaper insurance.
My advice (based on bitter experience) is this: Get your full licence as soon as you can, buy a smaller-engined motor - may I suggest the georgous new Suzuki Swift (looks like a Mini) with a peppy 1.0 litre engine , costs a lot less than a MINI to buy and will be cheaper to insure , then wait til you are older before you get your BMW 116 or MINI Cooper. This to me is a realistic approach.
I strongly believe that the whole insurance and car licence system in this country needs to be overhauled - it's a bloody disgrace!

I didn't start this thread to complain bout insurance costs. Ive done that b4! [:-D]
I was pissed off because the garage where i bought my car from has offered me so little for it less than 6 months later.
Personally when I got my car i knew my insurance price. So if I wanted cheaper insurance i would have gotten a smaller car.
We all know insurance is a rip off... :P

New cars drop in value like a stone but suspect the time of year is working against you as well. I read in the paper recently that ~50% of new car sales are at the start of the year so the dealers will be awash with used cars. Maybe worth while advertising it privately? Just checked on Carzone.ie (http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=search&MakeID=3&xMakeID=3&ColourID=&xColourID=&ModelID=1025&xModelID=1025&Doors=&BodyID=&Engine_Min=&Year_Min=&Engine_Max=&Year_Max=&Price_Min=&Price_Min_integer=Minimum+price+entered+was+not+an +integer.&CountyID=&xCountyID=&Price_Max=&Price_Max_integer=Maximum+price+entered+was+not+an +integer.&BusinessID=&xBusinessID=&IsPrivateSale=&FuelID=&SortBy=MakeAsc&MaxRows=100&InsertPeriod=&ResultFormat=&submit=Find+%3E%3E) and there's quite a few there for €30K+.
Personally I wouldn't get a new car cause you can get some great bargains on used ones. A few years ago, I picked up a 5 year old 328i for £14K from a dealer, new price was £42K at the time!

Even though there's nothing better than that new car smell it doesn't seem to make much financal sense buying a new car - buying a "nearly new" ex-demo model eight or nine months old seems to be the most sensible option. Let the first owner be the one hit by the worst depreciation!

I don't think that's very fair and a broad generalisation, any business is there to make a profit - some dealerships are better than others and of course it depends on their sales people also.
There are car dealerships out there that will treat their customers fairly - I had a great relationship with the dealership I bought my last car from - always came away feeling happy that I was well treated and the service was efficient and friendly.

Yeha new cars drop in value beacuse of the inital tax the goverment charge on top of em. VRT! Killer! And totally illegal for the goverment to do as far as i know. Somthing bout EU double tax laws or somthing..
I understand the time of year is against me on it!
I heard somwhere the best time to buy a car is at the end of the month as most sales staff need that extra sale to make their monthly targets! Handy tip!

Harry, welcome to reality! [:-D] Once a new car drives out of the showroom its seen as a year old! As they get older (1yr +) once september/October comes they are priced at the following years prices coz the garages have to allow for the fact that they mightn't sell them till Janurary!
As for the the 116i, i had one for a day and absolutely hated it! [:-(] It was small. cramped, unconfortable, dull (it looked like an Astra) and id have more power in a wheelbarrow! It was worth €33k but i wouldnt give €33euro for it!
Personally i think BMW's are over priced, although they have excellent resale values! The cost of servicing & parts are a rip off too!
If you are conscious about depreciation buy a two year old car and keep it another two years. This way you avoid the big depeciation but still get a relatively new car but get rid of it before you have to put any money into it!
However Harry, PM me and ill get you sorted coz i know people in the right places! [:-D] You know, its not what you know but who you know! [;-)]

The minute you start the engine of a car and drive away with it, it begins to depreciate hugely. Like its been said already it's best to buy a recent model with a few miles on it or towards the end of the month because of sales targets for the dealers. I know this because Daddy used to own a car dealership [:-P] . When it came to getting myself insurance though I made sure to get something cheap, efficient but with a small enough engine. Hence why I have a 2000 Hyundai Atoz with 1.1 litre engine. Good for everything and drives well. As much as I wanted a mini I knew the insurance would be almost as much as the car if they'd even quote me for it [:-(]

Oh wait... ur back off of it again.... :)
Thanks for the offer! :)
I was at a garage today (God I take alot of time off work!, but the bossman was with me so tis ok) and talked to a guy bout a price he would give me.
He told me it was worth 29 - 30 k. Cool! But wouldnt take it from me because...
The dealer I bought mine from just recieved 45 models the same as mine.
The BMW dealer had sent 45 - 50 of them for lease... with Hertz and Avis etc... and now they are all back in.... so thats why, he said, they wont take it!
So, if anyone is thinkin of buying a car... make sure that they arent all gone off to a rental company also... because you wont be able to sell that easy within 12 months!
Ur all so clever with ur cars.....

ive a new car, and would never buy a second hand car, you dont know what you are getting. my friends have cars secondhand and they seem to be in the garage more times than they are sitting in them. I paid 476 euro full comp insurance and very happy with it. The only thing i find is that there is a lack of decent accessories for it so I have to resort to overseas dealers or auto shops. A set of alloys will cost me 2,500 euros and i wont pay for them.
So for the moment, its just lovely scratchless hubcaps. And i wouldnt buy a bmw I series cos i dont like it and its so expensive and it looks like an Astra.

Thing is...if you buy a car...and bring it back the next day the dealer won't give you what you paid for it. They have to make their money somehow. Your best bet would be to chance your luck on http://www.carzone.ie
