It's been reported today that a new series of the classic TV series Doctor Who is in the pipeline.

The BBC's drama chief, Mal Young, said that a new series of the programme is in the "very early stages of development." However, some details have emerged; most notably that the new series will be penned by Russell T. Davies of Queer as Folk fame.

Davies said

"I grew up watching Dr Who and hiding behind the sofa like so many others. Dr Who is one of the BBC's most exciting and original characters. He's had a rest and now it's time to bring him back.

"The new series will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary. Although only in the early stages of development I'm aiming to write a full-blooded drama which embraces the Dr Who heritage at the same time as introducing the character to a modern audience."

The show had a long run on TV from 1963 to 1989, with various actors playing the Doctor over that period. No details are available as yet as to who might be playing the role in the new series, as Young, who will also reportedly be co-producer of the new show, explained

"Dr Who is a much-loved truly iconic piece of television history. It's time to crank up the Tardis and find out what lies in store for the Doctor.

"We're thrilled to have a writer of Russell's calibre to take us on this journey. However we're at the very early stages of development and further details including casting will not be available for some time."

The best news I have heard all week. I cant wait, I still watch the repeats on UK GOLD. It also has one of the best TV theme tunes ever. Orbital have remixed it, maybe they will use this for the new series. It will be nice to see some good ol' British science fiction from the BBC as most of it comes from the states. The Star Trek brand has gotten tired.
Tom Baker was my favourite Dr Who
