No RBJ, if the artist were dead it would be EXPENSIVE, not at all the same thing.

Are you sure RBJ didn't mean exactly what he wrote. Forget what this thread is about and reread it.

I just posted it because I thought it was surreal. Sorry but I don't get the whole its crap but not if your dead thing ... explain please?

I think the reference might have been to the fact artists' work tends to rise in value after their deaths... although I prefer damien's interpretation!

what was his interpretation? i still don't get it man!

Read it as RBJ speaking directly to KTS.

It reminds me of the original cover of that Germain Greer book 'The Female Eunuch.' That had a picture of a woman's chest with handles attached, the idea being that 'femininity'was a role that women slipped into. This seems to be saying something similiar about masculinity.

Amnesiac and whoever else, I must say I don't think it is at all amusing for a person to say to another person It'd be good if you were dead. In fact, it's rather disturbing. And so the bitchiness begins again!

Not funny, I don't understand how my name got dragged into this discussion of is it art or not in the first place, and why certain people feel the need to take constant petty pot-shots at other people. Please stop it!

Damien was being witty. Try not to take it so personally; he was playign with RBJ's words... i'm sure he'd have made the joke whether it was you, I or A.N.Other who had responded.
KTS

I still don't find it funny. And I did take offense to it. I don't believe one person can say to another, "Don't be so easily offended" or "Try not to take it personally". Everyone has a right to be offended by something they personally find offensive, just as I have, and I did feel it was another pot-shot at me, one of many I've suffered on this site, and just another sign of the inherent nastiness that people seem to feel the need to share with (and inflict upon) the rest of the site.
I'm not speaking about Amnesiac or Damien or anyone in particular, I just don't like the fact that this kind of thing happened - and continues to happen - on this board.
I do take offense. I do take it personally. I am now over it, but feel a right to have my say.
Besides, how is it remotely funny or even witty? It's nothing, it's stupid, it's ridiculously banal. At the most it is a play on words, nothing more, and one that just turns into a ridiculous put-down it'd be funny if you were dead.
But it did hurt. And just because you say, don't take it personally, that's not going to un-do the hurt I felt.

I thought it was hillarious, laughed my arse off. Thought the joke was aimed at viruswriter anyway if it was "aimed" at anyone. It's just word play.

Ah but the world would be a much better place if we had less "word play" and more "foreplay"

Threads that descend into this kinda behavior stopped me from posting when I first discovered this board a while back. I've seen this before and I gotta say it really puts me off an otherwise interesting and enjoyable board. I know part of the problem is seeing text in the absence of tone of voice or body language or any other clues you might pick up in a face-to-face conversation. With out those clues its very easy to always take the wrong interpretation from something said. Which is why I think the GC night out is a good idea and should be a regular event. The chance to get to know you "enemy" in real life, before casting judgement
I agree with RBJ wasn't it aimed at Viruswriter. Can't see why KTS is getting so upset. Anyhoo, I only skimmed through the posts so I mighta missed smt.

a question would have to be asked of rbj, was it said with malice. if so why did you direct a comment like that towards viruswriter and if not let that part of the thread die.

I can't speak for RBJ, but as far as I can make out he meant that if the artist were dead, it would be considered good art! As is almost always the case, the value of art increases once the artists in question has passed on.
As far as I can make out, no malice was intended by RBJ.

Oh look its the Thought Police. Back once again to disrupt free speech and freedom of expression. It was me just being smart. RBJ phrased something badly and I just highlighted it in a funny way.
I wasn't directing that at you KTS, Amnesiac misinterpreted my jab at a phrase that was easily misinterpreted (he is blonde you know). SPOT THE IRONY. If anyone it would have been directed at Viruswriter if it was going to be directed, but it wasn't.
KTS I have to say though that you willingly took up the mantle of "I'm being insulted NOTICE ME NOTICE ME " People should speak out about the important things that insult people, but to find offense in everything and nothing is another story altogether. If your funny bone doesn't vibrate to a particular strain of humour then let it pass.
Stop throwing the rattle out of the playpen because you don't class it as humour, many do. You are not the person that dictates or defines what humour is, theres nobody out there that does that. If someones humour bothers you and you can't ignore it or let it slide then you'll just become known as someone thats "bothered"
If we are constantly treading softly we won't be able to run or move fast in this world.
At the end of the day its just a phrase and there are many like it such as
Ah drop dead.
Fuck off and die.
I'm dead tired.
Go to hell.
etc

yes, I was on about that if viruswriter was dead, then his art would be more valuable. It was just accidentally phrased amiguosly and damien exploited this for humour effect, which is a commonly used technique in humour.
If anyone would like to complain about this, then I suggest that they isolate themselves from the world, perhaps never watch a tv show, read a book, listen to the radio in case they come across and example of comic relief, heavens forbid actually watch a comedy [o]. Lighten up.
And to mark this occasion of lightening up, I would like to christen a new thread "September 11th jokes" [)]
