Which licence ? Club or total ban on serving drink ? Best club in Cork at one time.

Didn't like it as a club either but it is a brilliant venue for live music. hopefully it will be still used for gigs.

It will be sorely missed by a lot of people. In just a couple of months they have closed two great nightclubs. Sir Henry's and the Savoy. Hopefully someone else will take it over. It really pisses me off. I'd go to the Savoy a lot and while there were a lot of people on drugs i never ever saw any trouble. the only reason they closed it down was because they were serving late and the music played til late. I was often in there til almost 4 o'clock. Why can't they close somewhere like the Pav or Mangans (Sory it's called Vibes now)These places are full of scumbags. Actually on second thoughts kep them open. Or else the scum might spill into other clubs!
Anyway Savoy R.I.P.

the savoy was by far one of the best clubs in cork, it really did surpass all others. it was the premier club in cork, the flagship club. it is a shame that it is gone.
i for one will miss it greatly

Agreed, its an awfull shame to see it go, I guess they will move at least some of the stuff to the Bodega, but wont quite be the same

the last time i went to fever was the end of august and it wsa on in bodega (alot of thanks and praise must go to bodega for hosting it) but it all ended far too early, they stopped seving and the music stopped at one. i thought fever was suppossed to be a club night and not a late pub night. when fever was on in the savoy it was on until 2.30 to 3.00 in the morning. with the savoy gone will it always be in bodega, will it always be over just as it gets started

Not sure, but I heard a while ago that the Bodega had a nite club licence but just never used it... maybe now ?

Your right about the Bodega having a club licence. Isn't there an alternative nite on in the white room every friday? I think its called goldsoundz and is promoted by the same people who do freakscene. Maybe they could do the same thing with Fever on a Sunday nite? Would have to go on late though cos last call at 1 is a joke.

The Pete Tong gig has been moved to The Opera House, they've taken the
seats out downstairs and it looks cool...
solice
8th October 2003, 05:24 PM
see thats the thing about the opera house, its not suppossed to have its seats taken out. even if the savoy didnt open again as a club it would make a fantatic live music venue.

apparently it was because of the live music that it was shut down, not because of the 300 opening hours. The music was starting too early locals were complaining
northsider
8th October 2003, 09:21 PM
Yeah it said that on the paper today that the owners of Quills had lodged a complaint over early soundchecks and queues blocking it's doors.
Bloody Moaners!

Yeah, that's Quills for ya.
Stuck up tight arses with no sense of fun.
bo_selecta
8th October 2003, 11:33 PM
And Quills had every right to lodge a complaint if their business was being affected!
I dont think that the Savoy would have lost their license unless the complaints were genuine.

muppets still haven't been arsed updating their website. Yes, we do have club nights on even though we're shut down. Please, continue to buy tickets for our non-existent concerts.

Went to Freakscene in ONE on Wednesday and thought it was a way better than in the Savoy. It works better with a slight ysmaller venue and Danascene having its own seperate room . The Savoy will be missed though as a gig venue. Saw some cool gigs there

Think the appeal is soon. So fingers crossed it might be open very shortly. Would love if freakscene went back to the savoy. I never really liked Club 1

i have to say that closing the only moderatley sized live music venue in the city a year before the capital of culture was very (i cant think of the word i want to use but basically blind to a cause) of the city council. it should have been kept open

I still think freakscenen in Henrys was best, you gotta have the dank for a metalish nite, mmm dank, oh and shadows to hide and lurk in, and those terrifying stairs tot he toilets (try those in heels with alchyhol in you) not to mention lots of railings to sit on, and een corners to go to sleep in. I miss henrys

I'm probably the only one here who lives right beside the savoy and could quite clearly hear the bass sounds - I even got to the stage where I could recognize some songs by the beat!
That's gone now and am glad only from the point of view of noise, but I dearly miss Sunday night (with the odd occasionally Wednesday thrown in!)

bo_selecta
24th October 2003, 05:57 PM
and how much does it cost to text that number? Those short code text numbers cost a lot more than a normal text... usually around 60c a text (but don't quote me on that)

i dont think it gave a price but i deleted it anyway. you only have to do it once anyway cos they take your name, unless you are a wee bit schizo and all your friends want in aswell [D][D]

Its the price of a normal txt. You can also just email them with your support instead.

The avoy now has their original license back, that is, to serve booze till 1230. Apparently that's all they ever had. A Club license doesn't exist, it's apparently a 3000 euro restaurent license wqhere you can serve booze till longer. On non-special nights in a CLub that's how they can charge an entry fee. The Savoy was flaunting this for years and now will have a big battle on its hands to get this restaurent license at all. Another wonderful example of the Singaporean... I mean Irish... government making Examples out of things.
Oh... don't misunderstand, I adored the Savoy and miss it as much as the next fan... but isn't it amazing what you learn if you listen to a taxi driver instead of avoiding his line of vision???
