Southern Gay Men¡¦s Health Project is currently looking for Peer Support workers. A Peer can be defined as 'a person who is of equal standing with another in a group'. Taking from this we suggest Peer Support Work can be described as any type of work that recognises that people have the capacity to help other people in tackling issues that affect them in their day to day lives. Training empowers Peer Workers with the skills, knowledge and strategies that are necessary to play a significant role in the process of change. To bring about this process of change we intend to develop an initiative which is two fold;
Firstly, we would like to make contact with men of all ages, and from different social backgrounds who would be willing to give some of their spare time to promote Sexual Health through the distribution of information, condoms and lube and the befriending and support of men who have sex with men.
The promotion of Sexual Health will require some training; the Health Project will provide this. All prospective Peer Workers will be fully supported by the Health Project. We especially welcome people who are familiar with ¡§cruising areas¡¨ and/or men who do not frequent or avail of services in the Gay community.
As a secondary part of this initiative our intention is to develop the Peer Support Group and encourage the organisation of Social Group Evenings. These evenings would be hosted by individuals in their own homes, and generally the idea is that the host invites a number of guests of their choosing to spend the evening chatting and socialising over some food and refreshments. Should the host wish to develop a particular theme for the night, say in relation to Gay Men¡¦s lives or Sexual Health ,the Health Project would be willing to develop and support any of these ideas. We will also contribute to the costs of each social evening. Ideally we would hope that Peer Support Workers would host the Social Evenings, should any person wish to participate in one or both ventures, this can be accommodated.
For Gay/Bisexual men and men who have sex with men there is a constant need to raise awareness of issues that impact in their lives. Southern Gay Men¡¦s Health Project is constantly promoting an holistic approach to Sexual Health, Positive Self Image and we continue to raise awareness of issues that affect our lives. Both of these ventures are intended to address those needs.
