There's nothing wrong with Loafers per se . . . trouble is that there just are not enough interesting, lively, normal people on the Cork scene to make Loafers lively, interesting etc

shoegirl, perhaps you've been talking to the wrong people. Some of the best nights out I've had on the scene have been in Loafers..

I dont know what everyone has against loafers, since it's renovation it is actually a very nice little bar. The Djs at the weekend are very good and there's more room in there than Taboo.

I've said it many times and I'll say it again... Loafers is much better than Taboo (in my opinion). Where Taboo caters almost exclusively to gay men as a lively dance/disco enviroment, Loafers is the more traditional quiet Irish pub (though the music is pretty good) where everyone can go, be they Lesiban Gay Bisexual or whatever, and feel comfortable. Plus I love it's tag-line The Straight-Friendly Bar!!
Yay or Nay? Loafers is the George of the Cork scene?

No Loafers is not the George of the Cork Scene and thank God for that! The George can be very cliquey, is always crowded and the music ain't great. Loafers is usually quite spacious, staff are really welcoming and is still very much a cork bar. A locla bar for local queers if you will! But the tourists seemt o appreciate it too, being so unique compared to other venues.
Certainly at the weekends Taboo attracts a younger, preppier crowd but it's unfair to label Taboo a "dance/disco" bar. It opens much earlier than Loafers and is very relaxed and chilled during the day. I often find Coldplay, Dido, REM and other very chilled msuic on the sound system before 7pm. The bar also has a large female clientele and from what I can see is very popular with younger lesbians.
I wonder would it be possible to please evryone if the Queer Community just launched a takeover bid in the Bodega??? By far and away my favourite bar in Cork...
And back to topic! Any updates on plans for Loafer's 20th?

The george is a meat market, loafers is nice and relaxed - maybe a bit too relaxed for some people but nice if you're having a drink with friends.

Am I alone in thinking that Taboo is a Doyle's bar aimed at hairdressers and their vacuous fag hags?

I wouldn't know. I don't go to bars during the day. But on the lighters in the machine in Taboo, it even identifies itself as a disco bar! Maybe I'll call in there during the day for a coffee or something, see what it's like?

Taboo is much nicer during the day than it is at night. But then its so crap at night, nothing can make up for that

I've only been to Taboo in the afternoon a few times, but it's always been deserted. It might be uncomfortably full in the evening, but I prefer it to be crammed than to be a graveyard.
And come on, it's not that crap at night. If you're with your friends and you're having a laugh, then it's not that different to any other city centre pub. It's what you make of it.
