I always said the Irish could never do Reality TV. RTE commissions a cheap alternative to "Survivor." What happens?

One week in and the bloody ship breaks up and runs aground! Now that's gotta leave a gaping hole in the summer schedule!

I think it is so funny that the ship sank!! Typical RTE. They proably got it from a cornflakes packet in the first place!! Cheap show and very cheap boat. Ha ha ha ha Poor old RTE

And we still have to pay a fucking licence fee. It's a shagging disgrace.

I couldn't agree more, Slayer, although I have to say, for the last two years or so, all TV has sucked royally. I blame Reality TV for creating the Micro Celeb and pushing boring and unattractive people's dull lives out of the tube 24/7.
Grrr.

did the irish big brother ever go ahead?

I have never heard of any plans for an Irish series of Big Brother. The concept is the intellectual property of Endemol... don't think they have ever produced anything for the Irish market. Never mind Big Bro, what about Irish digital television/radio for a start...

there were talks about an irish big brother somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd uk big brother as far as I can remember.

I can't see RTÉ or tvthree having the will or the resources for such a venture. I remember some TD making wild comments that RTÉ had to make an Irish Big Brother as Channel 4 was stealing so many Irish viewers with their show. Moron.

I'd love to see an Irish Big Brother! We could stick six nobodies from all over Ireland in a three bedroom council house somewhere in Navan, and watch them fail miserably as this week's task is to knit an interesting conversation together from an old shoe and bits of string. Fabulous.

I do agree with Booty though, TV has been crap in the past few years. I remember watching Dallas all those years ago and learning the correct way to carry a clutch bag from acutely observing Sue Ellen Ewing in action. (Incidentally, this is where my love of cowboys a la Dusty farlowe came from!) What have the children of today got??? Roy Cropper being date raped by Tracy Barlow, that's what!

rte did have plans for an irish big brother, and they wanted to have the house in a university city, for some reason. i remember there was an article in the evening echo where the journalist practically had an orgasm relaying the news that the house could be in cork. that was a couple of years ago, though, and rte seems to have dropped the idea in favour of producing stuff like cabin fever.

i loved the first two series of big brother, but i'm bored with it now. i never watched any of the other reality shows, though.

Despite or more likely thanks to the unfortunate sinking of the first ship, Cabin Fever seems to be catching the attention of the Irish public. I've watched reality tv shows form the States, Europe, Britain and I've got to say as a nation our bitching and backstabbing is second to none. Big Brother 4 in the UK has suffered from contestants making a concious effort to avoid conflict and confrontation whereas whenever x number of Irish are forced to live together under the watchful eyes of TV cameras the fireworks and bitching is rampant. Are we a nation of bitches?

There will be an Irish big brother.

Read it in a few newspapers.

Just read in todays Irish Times that one of the contestants, Fiona McGonnell, will be meeting with the FG party secretary. Her name recognition in invaluable it seems. Strangly enough this is the first time I've heard of her. Then again she is a Cavan girl.
I don't know what to make of this...
