Is the content escapist or oppressive, is the nub of the question? Perhaps the creation of unrealistic expectations in looks, love, and (standard of) living don't make an altogether positive contribution towards the development of good self-esteem in us?

Yes, we don't all have the cash to wrap ourselves in gucci 24-7. And we don't all have the perfect 6-packs either.

Magaazines and things printed on glossy paper are very escapist. There are some publications that are hard hitting and factual but they are in a minority. The creators/backers figure that people don't want everyday. People don't need a magazine for everyday, they have eyes and ears and local papers for that.

Thats why I like my online media and blogs more. Peoples online diarys and journals are more real and true and interesting. Theres no editorial pressures or advertising pressures either. Thats a good and bad thing. Some content can be badly put together but some can be really good and really good since freedom of expression is not smothered.

i find many if not all of the gay mags out there (attitude, gaytimes, GCN) to be incredibly boring. i have never once read an interesting article in a gay mag before.
