Yes Pride 2004, before some people state the obvious I do know its still 2003. The fact still remains that Pride 03 in Waterford was way bigger then the Cork one like. Why? Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I propose we start brainstorming now, yes, now, this very minute

They are seeking suggestions in Wateford already, however it was merely a suggestion.

Proud Mary, you are absolutely right. Here's a suggestion Organising a committee without vendetta or in-fighting to give us all the Pride Festival we deserve. Advertising it so people know what's going on. Getting people to come to Cork to attend. I steered clear of this year's Pride and with good reason I was actually ashamed that for a city with such an active gay population, our Pride paled in comparison to Waterford's. I was there and it was excellent. We could learn a thing or two from the South East.

Good idea Proud Mary. I feel the highlight of this years PRIDE was the BALL - which was just amazing in all aspects - I think it should be double or triple in numbers - have a HUGE BASH!

Well I only saw the last day of this years but enjoyed what I experienced,(not counting the guy in the bushes wanking while looking at the group I was sitting in *scary part was I was the only one facing him*) but was surprised by how few people there were out especially when you oncider how many lgb and ts there are in cork. Hmm I think ill have to get out the thubscrews and get all the ts's and tv's I know out this year. So any volunteers to man the screws?

gah, alright, my arm is twisted.

LETS KICK SOME WATERFORD ASSS!!

ahem, so, yes a committee would be good. unfortunately no such creature as a committee without in fighting exists...

What if last year's committee hired an event planner? An impartial, unbiased organiser of some nice events that are all mixed and don't just involve alcohol and dancing. Give them a quick brief, leave them off and that way everyone could sit back, relax and enjoy each other's company, instead of 'fannybangs of biblical proportions', as LeBaron would say -)Surely that's what Pride is all about?

We can be great for talking about this and that for Pride, but when it comes to the actual doing and organising (and supporting) its a different story.....

I was on Pride 2003 committee, and really there are some fact that people are not aware of...

* Pride in Cork is relatively a new thing (after all its only the second year)
* The initial organising meeting was poorly attended by the cork queer scene
* Funds were limited and fundrasing efforts badly supported by the queer community
* Our Pride had quite a few events which were quite a success, but people seem to have forgotten about - e.g. Soccer, Pride in Park, Film Showing & the Ball

The important thing here is "CORK PRIDE", which is still in it infancy, but as the years go by it will grow and grow.

Sure, I'm even looking forward to Pride 2005 - when Cork is European city of culture..

will pride get more funding from the govt. (local and national) when it is held in 2005 because of the whole capital of culture thing?

"a committee without vendetta or in-fighting"

Now that will be the day.

But it could so easily be achieved!! Inever understood why people can't put aside relatively small personal grievances for the good of everyone, and to mark Cork's scene as diverse and enjoyable.

committees, by their nature are all about vendetta and infighting. Particularly in this country.
And especially in this part of it.

LeBaron
6th November 2003, 06:18 PM
Yea, but surely 4 something like this those who get "Power Thrills" could just calm down for the good of de little people

amnesiac
6th November 2003, 06:21 PM
None of the little people went to the open meetings though did they?
PRIDE takes effort and work. it's ok for us to bitch and say how it could be better, but how many will put in time and work?

Bootyzilla
6th November 2003, 06:25 PM
From what I know of the previous 2 committee meetings I am afraid to put in time and work, in case it's all thrown back in my face. As I'm sure are many previous committee members. This is why I think an Event Planner or someone not from Cork would be a great idea. Also, committee members would get to relax and have a fun pride, instead of working like bastards for months and then nobody shows up.

Yea... why not bring in someone not steeped in " local " politics

bannshee

the problem is cost. Pride, like the Women's Weekend and the Fantasy Ball, doesn't get funding. And judging by the dismal rattle in the collection boxes on Loafers counter not many folk are willing to even donate their loose change to the cause. It is all very well for people to kvetch and moan, but if you don't like the way things are run get up off your arse and participate.

Proud Mary 1980

Ok right so, who waas the head of the committie last year, are they interested in doing it this year or do they want to hand it over to someone else and has cork an area partnership

bannshee
11th November 2003, 12:25 AM
Dave Roche is the one to ask. The Women's Weekend is enough for me.

Bootyzilla
11th November 2003, 11:48 AM
LOL

So how come there's never been a Pride Parade? (I'm not complaining, just asking...) I think it'd certainly give a boost to Cork Pride, and it would get people interested in what's going on around it, too.

the pride celebrations in cork is still in its infancy, this year was only its second year. give it time, let it grow, its still only a baby

Hey, we are working on the Dykes on Bikes bit..so if anyone sees a cute woman on a motorbike CONVERT HER!!!

Bootyzilla
13th November 2003, 07:44 PM
Dykes on Bikes would be cool! And Bears and Fairies and Femmes and Chubby Chasers and Body Builders... I think there should be a parade.

bannshee

Imagine it.
Somehow i can't see Cork having a parade in the near future. People barely went to the picnic in the park, never mind walking down Pana waving a little rainbow flag and singing........

'We're here, we're queer, get used to it!

bo_selecta
13th November 2003, 11:13 PM
I never saw the attraction of the whole pride festival/parade thing.

I don't object to it or what it stands for...just never felt it was something i wanted or could be part of...

Am not just talking about the cork one...am just saying in general.

alot of people dont see the point in pride or dont take part in it anymore because they dont like what it has turned into. its a pity. i dont think there will be a parade in cork for many years to come, eventually maybe. im sure its an aspiration.

Dates or anything?

I would imagine it will be the August Bank Holiday weekend. What do people want for pride?

I think work shops would be good as well as an awareness campaign would be fab and pride in the park.

went to pride in milan last year... it was good... crowds at it... dont think a march would really work in a city the size of cork... onlookers wouldnt understand it...

Bootyzilla

Workshops for things like relationships, self-esteem, healthy living etc - and also, I remember going to a poetry & fiction reading at one Waterford pride - which i think could work really well here. I'd love to see a bigger version of the treasure hunt from the year before last - that was SO much fun!

Another ball would be a great way of finishing it off, as long as the tickets were cheaper than last year and more people know about it in plenty of time. The Men Vs Women soccer match is another good idea - I don;t know how many people show up to it - but advertised & promoted properly it could be fantastic.

And press coverage is an absolute MUST, if for nothing else, to show the rest of the country that Cork's Pride Festival is something they should travel to.
