Sandra Nettelbeck / Germany / 2001 / 107 mins / Club
Starring Martina Gedeck, Sergio Castellitto, Maxime Foerste

Mostly Martha is a delicious and affecting romantic -comedy-drama with a wonderful central character, the brilliant but extremely temperamental gourmet chef Martha Klein ( Martina Gedeck), who works in a Hamburg restaurant and is punctilious about her dishes. This is a food-lovers film in the tradition of Big Night and other culinary delights as great attention has been paid to the details of cuisine.
Martha's perfect world however is turned upside down when her moody 8-year-old niece Lina comes to live with her. To make matters worse, at work a second chef has been hired by the restaurant owner which really tests her patience. Mario (Sergio Castellitto) is the new Italian sous-chef who's carefree and popular with the rest of the cooking staff. Gedeck is superb and she acts just the way Martha cooks; exactly and effortlessly. A highly entertaining, funny and witty film from Sandra Nettlebeck that has the right mix of humour and pathos , seriousness and insouciance. A film not to be missed!

"With its tantalizing blend of comedy, romance and food, Mostly Martha is a movie to savor" Empire

"Sparkling and funny" New York Times

Sounds good! Love German films... und ich verstehe ein bisschen Deutsch! Don't forget this weekend is your last chance to catch the like sof Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, Wild Strawberries, Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, L'Atlalante etc. all at the Kino.

Great little film. For some reason, most people don't seem to realise it's German - not French or Italian. I liked this movie, it's simple, it's genuine. The trailer doesn't do it justice. Unfortunately, I can already - with horror - envision the Hollywood remake. Julia Roberts anyone? Ugh!

It's mostly boredom. The Kino are running a bring a friend for free offer to bolster audience numbers. It has the most annoying soundtrack in the world and a protagonist who fulfills every negative stereotype one ever had of Germans. Apologised to the friend I brought for free when 100min+ snoozefest was over. Watch some Nigella Bites and Run Lola Run instead.
