View Full Version : We need a new Venue!

You know when you have one of THOSE weekends, where no matter what you end up doing you end up making a complete eegit of yourself. We'll that's what made me think, seeing as the savoy hasn't a hope in hell of reopening, after endless false alarms which are beginning to piss us gay boys off... we need a new gay venue... exlusively or one which opens fri, sat and sun.
I think the Other Place, although the scene of many passion filled (drink fuelled) nights has seen it's day. I mean, honestly, how many of ye bring str8 mates there and find yourself apologising about the place. I found myself saying "they're planning a huge refurbishment of the place" I should have added "of the toilets".. I suppose they are the place where we have our sex, take our drugs and have our sex when our b/f is around.
I mean come on, it has the coldest, cruisiest atmosphere of any club I've ever been to. Recall when workout in the savoy started.. it was the best thing that happened on the cork scene. It was fun, friendly and you still could pick up your shag as easily. The atmosphere used be electric. Then they even ended in fucking things up... how irish.
Ok I mean I don't mean to knock TOP excessively seeing it was the savior of us fags at a time when there was no tolerance or acceptance. However, I think it has seen its day. For me, that place is filled with memories.. some I'd rather forget... Clean slate please bob!
Me thinks there are going to be a long of angry posts following this...[^]

i wouldnt say, get rid of the other place but i am in agreement, there needs to be something else. with fever over there is a niche in the market for any club that wants to start up a club night to get some revenue, start rolling in the pink pound/euro. but thats just a club night, i think a new club would be more appealing.
but who will take it up, what club will fill this niche, the half moon? club one? there are so many clubs there.

Wasn't there a club night launched a couple f months back in Clib FX?
That didn't take off. I think everyone keeps moaning about the need for a new venue but when one starts people are just too lazy to give it go?
To be honest i never went to that club night in FX either but if they got the crowd i'm sure it would still be going now!

Yeah but if the guys in Taboo got off their arses and went it could have became a gay hotspot aswell. I think a lot of gay people in Cork are set in their ways and are very weary to try new places.

If a new gay venue or club is shite and substandard why should people give it repeat business ? If someone gets a dj to play "greatest gay anthems ever part 3" and sticks him in a badly put together club should we attend ? Oh hang on we do in droves already.... No really, being non-flippant again, people just ended up going back to the Other Place because though its still a shithole its the more familiar one.
I agree with sents comments that there is a need for another gay venue.

I dunno, but why are they giving the old gay venue which is shite and substandard repeat business?

well they go there or sorry, we go there because its well-established so everyone else goes there... yes, we are sheep. Not forgetting that there is no where else in the whole of this city which is exclusively (and I mean in more ways than one) gay. Fair enough if they ripped the place down and rebuilt then maybe we're on to something?!?! Although it has to be noted that there are so many gay men that don't frequent TOP because of the reasons I cited earier so I think an alternative is the way forward. Velvet lounge is excellent except for the fact that it's on every other Saturday.
Then again... is it the people on the scene we're sick of?

i think you might be on to something there!
The promoters of the Velvet Lounge are trying to get it runing every week now (so i've heard anyway). Its been on for the past 3 weeks..... so i dunno

In the other Place's defence, they have made a really big effort over the last 6 months or so to refurbish and I have to say I like it much more now than I ever used to. While I totally agree the need is there for competition, I also think we're partly to blame for the lack of a new gay venue... is our scene big enough to warrant another club operating as a strictly gay venue? (I'd love one but what would be the point if it couldn't last very long... just interested to know what people think)
Also, Isidingo might have been an alternative but it was a very poor one. I'd rather go to a good straight club than a piss-poor gay one that doesn't attract a diverse crowd. That's why I think the Velvet Lounge would be a good idea, even if their music is sometimes a little too left-field to appeal to the masses.

Last time i went it was 13euro but sometimes it can be more expensive depending on who's DJing. Thats not too bad. The Savoy was 12euro!
