I'm off to Finland in a week, and am BROKE! Accomodation is sorted and so are the flights, thanks me to god, but any advice on how to live really really cheaply there for a week without having a crap time? I'm talking about €200 or max of €300 for the week to survive on ...
Any advice or suggestions appreciated.
Cheers,

GAY
Considering that homosexualism was criminalized in Finland until 1971 and that until then homosexuals were even castrated, the present gay scene in Helsinki is remarkable. The general opinion about them is pretty open-minded. But "vitun homo!" (fucking faggot) is still tossed out as a curse, against hated straight people as well. The latest issue has been whether homosexuals should be allowed to register their relationship.
The gay community in Helsinki is not very large, but there are still a couple of nice places to go out. In Eerikinkatu there is the popular gay bar Con Hombres at number 14. At Iso Roobertinkatu 28 is DTM (= Don't tell mama), the most popular gay club with the hottest music in town. There you can find "Tom of Finland" styled moustached men. Leatherman Tom was undoubtedly Finland's internationally best known gay individual (and artist, too).
You can also visit Café Escale (Kansakoulukatu 3), Mann Street (Mannerheimintie 12 A; tel. 612 1103), and the Nalle Pub (Nalle = Teddy bear) in Kallio (Kaarlenkatu 3-5). The Terrace Bar in the 6th floor in Stockmann has traditionally been popular among the gay society. Some newer places include Pore (Helsinginkatu 15; tel. 773 1303) and Fairytale (Helsinginkatu 7; tel. 870 3226).
For information on the latest action contact SETA, the Finnish Organization of Sexual Equality (Hietalahdenkatu 2 B 16; tel. 612 3233). You can also check out their queer info pages at http//www.seta.fi.
And you can always rent yourself out for the price of a few beers at any park opposite any train station in europe (except ireland)

I wanted to travel through Scnadinavia this summer but the standard of living is very, very high in these countries. Some friends have mine have been to Finland and really like the country though, particularly Helsinki. Check out "The rough Guide to Scandinavia" as these books are aimed at those on a budget. And enjoy yopur trip!

Well, I never did go in the end, decided I'm not the type of person to live on such a tight budget, not while on Hols anyhow!
