Hi all. As you know Waterstones, Easons, Mercier, etc. have gotten rid of their LGB sections.

However, I'm working in one of the above bookstores and have made a pitch to the manager, to bring it back! I'll be in charge of it if it happens.

But I need it to be stocked with things that will sell. Please reply, PM, or email me and let me know what you want to see - i.e., what you'll buy. Authors, Titles, ISBNS ... whatever you've got!

Remember, now that The Other Place has closed down this will be a good chance to get a decent selection. Please note Only UK/Ireland-published books, not books that to your knowledge are only available in the US.

If it goes ahead and is set up, I will of course reveal the bookstore I'm working in (for the moment I'm keep it secret to be a mysterious bastard! hee hee)

Gay travel guides generally sell well, especially Spartacus, and the Fodor Guides. I think Rough Guides have started bringing out gay travel books too. Check out http//books.gayguide.net/ for other guides.

I like collections of gay short stories, Penguin, Fable and others have published some over the last few years. Gay Men's Press, which is owned by Gay Times, bring one out every year or so, as well as novels, see http//www.gaytimes.co.uk/gmp/

There's quite a few gay authors who rack up big sales Armistead Maupin, Sarah Waters, Christopher Rice, among others, so I'm sure their novels would sell well.

Thanks for your replies, Bill and Damien. The more the merrier as once I have a few replies I'll print this out for my manager to see - also the link you sent me Damien.

Cheers,
KTS

P.S. Any lesbian books people would like to see too? Remember gay AND lesbian.

don't really read many novels but i liked a book called "two gentlemen sharing". i can't remember the author's name, but it's about a young chicken doing some gold-digging, it's a great trashy read! it was published originally in 2001, i think.

Excellent thanks, Southside Slapper. Also, I've added to the list myself the following

HERE'S THE LIST (like the pink colour? - thought it apt)

Robert Rodi's novels - including The Birdcage (yes, also a film); Drag Queen; Fag Hag; Bitch Goddess; and Kept Boy.

Stephen McCauley's novels - The Easy Way Out, The Man of the House, True Enough, and The Object of My Affection (made into a film starring Jennifer Aniston).

The Virgin Gay Guide by Tim Lamming.

Updated versions of Spartacus.

The Mammoth Book of Lesbian Short Stories and " " Poems.

Of course, others include the new book by Alan Cumming's Tommy's Tale, At Swim Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill, and anything still in print by Irish lesbian writer Emma Donoghue (her excellent novels Stir-Fry and Hood are both sadly now out of print).

I think I've pretty much got enough now to approach my manager with, but if anyone wants to add more, feel free.

Cheers,
KTS

Lads and lasses, once again let me say a big THANK YOU for all your help in this topic.

I've spoken with the manager and a lot of the staff, and I've been given a cautious green-light.

So, basically, within the next two months, I'll be putting it together and (provided nobody changes their minds where I work) we'll be starting a modest two-shelf display. If it starts, selling, we're considering a much larger section. Once it happens, and hopefully it will, I'll post with full details... Just please, please, please BUY THE BOOKS (as in the Ellen show ha ha![)]) or it'll be closed down again.

Btw, we're considering titles for the section. I want to go with the honest GAY & LESBIAN. But there's others being considered such as QUEER CORNER (I doubt this one will happen!), LGBT READING, GENDER STUDIES (ugh! don't like this one!), ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLES READING (a cop out in my opinion). What do people think? Or any suggestions for new titles?

I like Gay and Lesbian best. But we can't buy the books if we don't know what bookshop they're going to be in, so you'll have to come out of your career closet...

Thanks Damien. [)]

I will reveal all once the section is up and running - the reason I'm not saying now, is that the section is in development, hell hasn't even started, and don't want a lot of people coming in asking when it'll be up.

Response to VW Yes, this is true. If you go into Waterstones, the bottom shelf of Sociology is called "Gender Studies" (i.e., scaredy-cat way of saying "Gay and Lesbian").

"The Virgin Gay Guide" by Tim Lamming is there. There's also a book called "Queer". A book called "The Handbook of Gay and Lesbian Studies". And "Family Outing" by Chastisy Bono (daughter of Cher) ... among others.

All highly recommended. Go buy them!
