I have it on very good authority that Karaoke is back on in Taboo. It will however be on Tuesdays starting this Tuesday 15th July. Apparently there might be a fe surprises over the weekend

Is that the best we can do Karaoke in Taboo? really it's not very good. Infact i don't go into Taboo anymore,it's just so packed and smokey. The only thing it's got going for it is location.
It's a pity Loafers is not closer to town. Two mates of mine owned bars in Watrford and one in Limerick, they want to expand into Cork.Their doing research at the moment and are looking at the possibility of opening a trendy city centre gay bar or at least a gay friendly bar, they feel there's an opening.I don't know is Cork big enough?Their asking me but i don't know what to tell them.
Still would be nice a clean non smelly trendy city centre gay bar.
I feel a song coming on.. take me to the gay bar gay bar...
I think their looking at the Roundy & the former Preachers on Washington Street.

that sounds great, that is one thing that Cork is missing.

toally agree with jock! taboo is by far too small..

sily I kow but could we turn a pub "gay"?

I don't like the idea of an exclusively gay venue... luckily I'm of the age where I have no fear of being who I am in "friendly" venues like the Bodega and the (cramped) Roundy.

It wqould be nice to have more choice on the scene however. One has to wonder is there a big enough gap in the market to reward any investment. nobody wants another pkey bar, but is there demand for a larger "exclusively" gay venue?

Has anybody been to the gay bar that openend recently in Limerick? It certainly makes itself out to be quite a venue in GCN!

Think taboo definitely needs to be expanded, it's tiny and cramped. I think there is a market for a new exclusively gay bar in the city centre. There are probably a lot of people who don't go out because they don't like Taboo and Loafer's is a bit of a walk

I once read about Guerilla Queer Bar. The concept is a group of gay men/lesbians meet, go to a straight bar and make it gay for an evening. Fabulous! if the Woodford was still maguires I'd vote for it as our number one target.

That sounds like a fab idea!

Competition is good. Even the threat of competition is good. If another Gay Bar or Gay Friendly bar comes in it will improve conditions in the other two venues as well.

Theres definetly a market for another Gay Outlet. Look at the numbers that go to Fever on a Sunday night. What other Sunday night club gets that amount of people.

Queer people are crying out for more choice.

Interesting, read your thoughts on above,i'll pass them on to my mates. Just on Taboo again, does any one fine the staff behind the bar really rude?there's a little guy and he's the pits. He'll put your change down in a pool of beer or almost throw it at you, never says thanks, pulls a losy pint and is generally rude. There's an older guy who's always very nice but the younger guys are so bad,Loafers staff are far nicer.

sure Taboo is small and pokey but it was welcomed when it opened - it has gotten a bit rough around the edges. So a proper revamp is in order. Maybe they should open another floor. But yeah I have found some of the staff to be very rude sometimes

As a (part-time) member of Taboo bar-staff I always try to be polite and friendly. I still pull a damn lousy pint at times though... I'm only learning ;) I'm not going to make comments specifically about my workmates (not that I share the above opinions)but I think the staff the three gay venues in cork are generally quite good and really friendly. Much higher standard than some non-gay places I could care to mention. And I think the bar-staff do make a huge difference in a bar or night club. Don't get me started on the pretentious yobs who seem de rigeur in The George...

most are really realy pleasent and I have nothing but Praise for them. Paulie is simply delightful. Lol is a dote, Pat is very polite. Mary is just fabulous (no matter what anyone may think) She is a lovely woman. I could go on but I have have bad experiences with one or two. Shame that there is a few bad apples to ruin the Barrell

I said I wouldn't comment on the people I work with, but I have to single out one for special praise (sorry, I don';t care if it's not professional, I'm not apid to do this!). Pauline of taboo is like a mother to me. Coming out fully over the last few months has been difficult ands she's always been there for me. I joke that she is my "Gay Mum" (I'm not out to my parents) but in reality she is one of my closest friends. And she makes a damn good Sex on the Beach.

And lads this is seriously off-topic. I think someone mentioned something about Karaoke tonight???

Any hints as to who is hosting it Kebar? Surely MC Pat ain't going to down Fabula's old frocks?

In the spriit of Big Borther 4 Gimmicks/Surprises... surely the fabulous Ms. Debeaumarchais ain't making a surprise return? She is appearing at Waterford Pride according to GCN!

What's everybody's Karaoke number? I like to sing "Everbody hurts" by REM but I can't see that going down too well in Taboo. Have also done an outrageously cmaped up rendition of th Spice Girls' "Who Do You Think You Are?"

Amnesiac, why does everything have to be camped up?. REM Everybody hurts? is that at your singing? or after the pints you pull in Taboo?.

i think a new gay venue in cork (city center location) would be a good thing, if not a great thing. if enough money is invested in it to make it a nice bar, welcoming to all with space then the question is not "is there enough demand in this small city for another gay pub?" the question is "is there enough demand in this small city for taboo?"

i for one would welcome another pub, competition is a great thing for inspiring improvement.

Not everything has to be camped up jock, I lay off the eye liner and blusher when doing my Michael Stipe impersonation. My outrageously fantabulous rendition of a Spice Girl's classic merely shows off my range.

oh god, jock, now you'll have to burn all your R.E.M. records [0]

Well, Michael Stipe has never actually come out as being gay. He's hinted that he's bi "I'm bilingual, bilateral, bi everything..." was his reply when he was questioned about his sexuality in an interview.

When R.E.M. played Rock in Rio a couple of years ago, a journalist quoted Stipey's opening comment when he bounded onstage as "Rio is the sexiest place I've ever slept alone in." He had actually said "Rio is the sexiest place I've ever set foot in," but when he met the journalist subsequently, he agreed that his was the better quote.

He came out as being gay alright, on the day the album "Reveal" was released. Exact words being "yes I am a gay artist" plus stuff about him being in a gay relationship for the past 4 years.

Oh I didn't know that, that's cool.

I don't really follow R.E.M.'s career as closely as I used to, but I still like them.

If anyone deserves to be happy, Michael Stipe does. Made me very sad to hear he had aids (going way off topic on this thread I know).
