Breaking news! The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is proud to announce that the Eurovision Song Contest format was purchased by Asiavision Pte. Ltd., to hold the first ever Asiavision Song Contest in mid-2009! Eurovision.tv gives you the details...

The plan is to organize the first ever Asiavision Song Contest in mid-2009, with 15 represented countries, including China and India. It will be based on the highly popular Eurovision Song Contest, which is an annual competition for active Members of the EBU, represented by the public broadcasters in their respective countries.

The first contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland in 1956. Since then, the contest has become a true European tradition with more than 40 countries participating.

"Having brought the European version of the Eurovision Song Contest to the Middle East and North Africa, we are now delighted that viewers across Asia will enjoy one of the best established entertainment shows in the world," says Bettina Brinkmann, Head of Formats and Special Events at Eurovision TV. "The format has proven it can travel worldwide. We are looking forward to other versions of it developing internationally," she concludes.

"The format is highly suited to the Asia region and its people who love popular music and have a strong national pride", says Andreas Gerlach, CEO of Asiavision Pte. Ltd. "Asia today is all about competition, economically and politically. The Song Contest is a friendly competition between cultures. Like in Europe, the universal language of music will help to bring people closer together and nurture mutual understanding in the region," Gerlach believes.

The annual song contest is planned to be a six-month regional and national tournament culminating in the Grand Final. The song contest will be distributed in the following countries: China, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Targeting the most populous region in the world with more than three billion people the show has a potential audience of over 500 million viewers. A number of broadcasters have indicated their desire to be the Host Broadcaster for the first ever Asiavision Song Contest.

Monday, September 22, 2008: (Hong Kong) :

Asia is to have its own version of the Eurovision song contest in 2009 with India and at least six other countries and territories taking part, a Hong Kong news report said on Monday.

China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong have all committed to taking part in the contest which will be telecast across the region, the South China Morning Post said.

Contests to select the entries from each of the participating destinations will be held early next year before a three-hour finale at a venue yet to be decided, the newspaper said.

Asiavision, the company set up to arrange the event, said that unlike Eurovision, which launched the international careers of acts like ABBA, the Asian contest would feature existing pop stars.

"We are aiming at having established artistes," said spokesman Mishal Varma. "It's like the Olympics for music."

Varma said the organizers of Eurovision had been consulted about the idea and partnerships would be formed with broadcasters in each of the participating countries and territories.

The Eurovision song contest has run for 53 years and is as famous internationally for its naff tunes and heroic failures scoring "null points" as its famous graduates like Lulu and Cliff Richard.

India has also confirmed they will join the first contest.

Right I'm not exactly upset that Dima gets to rip his shirt off year after year as Russia's entry, but I DO think that there are much more 'European' countries that deserved to win/be recognised

Well hopefully the new voting system will fix that ;)
