Eurovision hopefuls slug it out on YouTube
By Fiachra Ó Cionnaith

MORE than 10,000 fans have given an unofficial YouTube thumbs-up to a handful of Irish entrants for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

For the first time since the often ridiculed competition was launched, song hopefuls attempting to win the right to represent Ireland have been able to make their song public before the national final, in the hope of gathering grassroots support.

The estimated 300 entrants dreaming of representing the country in Moscow this May will be whittled down to just six by the time of the Late Late Show live final in a fortnight’s time, where a panel of judges, headed by Linda Martin, will pick the winner.

But while they will not be officially unveiled until February 20, five bands attempting to win early public support have placed their singles on the popular video-sharing website www.youtube.com (http://www.youtube.com), with more than 10,000 people already viewing the music online.

Among the bands seeking early public support include The Cowmen (Serious Water, 228 views), Kyle Kennedy and Shane Creevey (Seize the Day, 55 views), Chris Crocker (Mind in the Gutter, 7,732 views), Lauren White (A New Way To Fly, 526 views), and Lamph (Roisin Dubh, 1,386 views), with all songs — apart from Mind in the Gutter which has been already available — going online this week.

As part of its single, Waterford-based band Lamph has enlisted the help of early school leavers to take part in what the group’s leaders Eoin, 33, and Clodagh Jackson, 30, describe as a mix of "pop, dance and disco".

The song has been rejected by Irish Eurovision panellists for the past two years, but Eoin said he is confident this year will prove third time lucky.

"I’m a Eurovision nerd and I’ve done my research. This is a song that will work," he said.

"Before this year, if you promoted your song before the official national event you’d be disqualified, but the rules have been changed this year.

"I believe our song is good enough, I’ve looked through the trends in the Eurovision and it would definitely appeal to different parts of Europe.

"It’s about the economy to an extent, a line in it is says ‘there are no survivors in the eye of the tiger’. But the bottom line is I’m a massive Eurovision fan and I know it will appeal to voters. At the very least we won’t be knocked out in the first round if we’re picked," he said.

The final six Irish candidates for this year’s Eurovision contest will be unveiled on the Late Late Show in two weeks’ time. Here are the songs:

Lamph (Roisin Dubh):

Chris Crocker (Mind in the Gutter):

I thought that Louis Walsh was forming a boy/girl band for it??

Then again this is taken from 'The Herald'

Louis set to relive former Eurovision glory

Louis Walsh may be re-living his former Eurovision glory after collaborating with music mogul James Hyland to create a new pop band for the contest.

The Herald can reveal that the X Factor judge has been advising the Bubble Hits co-founder about his plans to set up a fresh and trendy act for this year's competition.

And James explained that he's determined to comb the country and find the best young talent to compete in RTE's forthcoming Eurosong 2009.

"Ireland's Eurovision entry has basically gone to pot over the last few years, they have all been a total embarrassment. Over in the UK, Andrew Lloyd Webber has come on board but we don't seem to be taking it seriously.

"I've been speaking with a lot of people and I reckon a modern Bucks Fizz would work so I'm looking for two guys and two girls who are aged between 16 to 25 years of age, and who are natural-born performers."

The entrepreneur, who set up the Irish music station with Lee Walsh in 2006, has drawn on all his showbiz contacts to help him push the new band.

"I've got some really good tracks from people who have written for the likes of Rihanna and Westlife, so finding the right song won't be a problem. We do a lot of gigs and we know the younger market inside and out and know what appeals to people," he continued.

"I've known Louis Walsh for years so I asked for his advice, given that he managed two of our previous Eurovision winners and he's on exactly the same wavelength as us. He'll probably come on board at some stage as well."

He's now hoping that his chosen band will then be selected by RTE as one of the finalists on the Late Late Show special later this year.

"We want people who can sing and dance. We're looking for a High School Musical-style group. It's all about having fun with it," he added.

"I know everyone slags off the Eurovision, but it's still one of the most-watched shows of the year.

"It's time to stop repeating the mistakes of the past by sending over people like Donna & Joe and do it properly, bring back a bit of national pride."

Louis Walsh...actually where is westlife these days?

They've taken a year out! Basically gone to write some "amazing" materail and come back with a huge album, rather than churning out album after album of covers.

I can neither confirm nor deny the existance of a new, super talented, super sexy Irish group. I also could neither confrim nor deny that there are 2 guys and 2 girls in the band that have fantastic voices and that the first song i may or may not have heard is BRILLIANT. (The kind of stuff we've never produced from this country before).

It doesnt seem likely (even if this band did exist) that they'd go into Eurovision, as its a graveyard for acts these days.

This Hyland fellow seems to have an in with the incredible Bubble Hits...so at least the video, which may or may not be scheduled to film in the next two weeks will probably get some airtime, but i think everyone will be hearing alot about a new group fairly soon.

BUT as far as Eurovision goes, i doubt they'll end up there. HOPE they wont anyway :)

P.S Can you tell there are alot of secrets floating around with this??

The Chris Crocker and the Kyle Kennedy/Shane Creevey songs didn't work for me.

And when i youtubed Chris Croker i got that sap who does online piss-takes. Is that actually the guy? He's not Irish is he? He's American no?? Is that actually a candidate for the Eurovision??

I actually ADORE the Lamph song!! It's part celtic, part dancey. I think it'd be perfect for ESC.

If the 'Mind in the Gutter' song i heard on YouTube is genuinely a contender, then i reckon it's a pretty decent one. It's modern and very like Britney.

I liked Lauren White's one too. I shouldnt represent us coz it's not strong enough, but tis pleasant enough.

Agreed, my top three out of those would be Lamph, then Chris Croker, then Lauren White. Any of them would be better than the shite we've put in in recent years. (flashback of a singing turkey *shudder*)
