Yeah - great movie - never thought I'd say that about a movie with a rabbit at it's core !! Jake 'whats his name' is very cool and he is also in the new film with Jennifer Anniston (The Good Girl) which is actually pretty good.

Jake Gylenhall (sp?) is awesome in Donnie Darkio. While I haven't seen the Good Girl yet I have heard mixed reviews. I heard she was awesome in it but the story line can be boring at times. When my midterms are over I plan to check it out.

FANTASTIC MOVIE.

DONNIE DARKO makes David Lynch (of whom I'm a big fan) look out-dated and flat.

It's a brilliant little film. Confusing, intriguing and inventive, it eventually folds back upon itself, and makes you leave the cinema in a daze.

A great movie, that you'll have fun figuring out, both while you're watching it and for days after!!

So many possible theories exist for this movie, I won't include one here... Suffice it to say, go see it yourself.

Its one of those movies that is more enjoyable the more you watch it, rather than less.

I thought "The Good Girl" was a big, big disapointment. Jennifer anioston did turn in a great performance but dear Jake where did it all go wrong mate? Script was clever in places but ultimately weak and the whole thing was simply too cliché driven. As far as I'm concerned, The Good Girl only succeeded in proving Jennifer Ansiton can act and is almost able to carry a whole movie all by herself.

(Thought John C. Reilly was good too)

Sorry for reviving an old thread but I had to comment on this one. I loved Donnie Darko. I saw The Good Girl at the Kino too and I must say I thought it was great, although I'm a fan of both Jake Gyllenhaal and John C. Reilly anyway. I don't normally like Jennifer Aniston at all at all but I admired her taking on a darker, more twisted project than usual and she disappeared into the role so deeply that I didn't think of her as "Rachel from Friends" once during the film. Very strong performance.

But yeah, Donnie Darko was a real class act and destined to be a future cult classic. It was originally intended to be released in the US in winter 2001 but was postponed after September 11 due to the scene of the plane engine crashing into his bedroom at the start. When it was eventually released in the States nearly a year later it quickly sank without trace and didn't get the attention it deserved, until word-of-mouth spread and it found more success on video.

It did remind me a lot of David Lynch too and he is one of my favourite directors I have Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart on video, The Elephant Man made me cry like a baby and his last one Mulholland Drive was a truly mind-boggling masterpiece. Eraserhead ruled too.

The crappy thing is this film hasn't got the credit it deserves i mean its one of those exclusive to xtra-vision films. And they pick some bad films i know because i used to work there. Its a sad inditment of the film industry that U.S. companies think if a movie dies on its ass there it will here too.

Donnie Darko got critical acclaim and its writer/director is becoming hot property in Hollywood so we can look forward to more class films from this guy. I read a review of three other screenplays he did and he is going to do stuff as good as Donnie Darko. This young kid is full of promise. Donnie is cult status and those of us that enjoyed it and know of it now can go to others in a few years time that we saw that youngfella Kellys first feature when it came out and we were well ahead of the pack. ) I have it on dvd but haven't seen the dvd since last November. Its a very popular item with my friends.

Ok, I'm just going to say I did not like Donnie Darko.

I saw it last night, and to be honest I found it pretty boring.

The storyline was neither here nor there, all we seemed to look at was Donnie looking straight ahead with the psycho look in his eyes at a giant rabbit.

The best part was Drew Barrymore. And the Fear video thing. And the shove the video up your ass scene.

Anyone who loves this movie, I'd highly recommend the Region 1/US DVD. It's awesome.

It's availabvle to buy on Region 2 disc though. Are there differences KtS?

KTS

Yep, amnesiac, more special features. The region 2 disc is too vanilla. The Region 1 disc is much better. 2 commentaries, a lot of deleted scenes, and other cool extras.

Btw, shouldn't we move this to The Review?

What follows is the review I wrote on IMDb

Date 1 March 2003
Summary DONNIE DARKO - REVIEW 2 (SHARP SPARK)

"This makes David Lynch (of whom I'm a big fan) look out-dated and flat. This is a brilliant little film. Its one of those movies that is more enjoyable the more you watch it, rather than less."

The above is the original review I wrote about DONNIE DARKO. But I just want to say and write so much MORE about it. This movie has become a huge part of my life lately. After buying it on DVD, I watched it several times more, with and without the two commentaries - and became engrossed in the deleted/extended scenes and other extra features.

There is so much to say about this movie - I could fill a book. Suffice it to say, well that there is too much to say and no one review is justifiable for this movie.

Is it a science-fiction movie? A teen-angst drama? A social commentary focussing on 1980's suburbia? All of the above? And more? The last two -yes. And it has passion perfectly balanced with pain, and emotional depth layered within its complex and intoxicating structure of suspense.

Unlike other so-called "weird" films, this is not intentionally weird. It just is ... well, its own movie.

Watch this movie. Maybe you'll hate it. Maybe you'll be nonplussed. Maybe like myself (and my friend Kevin - hi Kevin if you're reading this!) you'll become addicted to it. One thing is certain it's one of the most original movies I've seen in a long time.

Don't just read reviews of this movie - see it for yourself. And that is all. Thank you for reading.

I hated it! I thought it was sooooo boring. And a bit dull. And bland. Mind you, I never liked films with teenage angst in 'em much anyway. And what the hell was with the fat chinese chick? What was the point of her? Background scenery? low-budget remake of the final Ghostbusters 1 fight scene?

Argh!

A great movie and now a great book about the movie, available in most bookshops for €18.45 (if not on the shelves, it can be ordered in) or online.

Book Description
An indispensable guide to one of the most memorable films of recent times.
From the Back Cover
The critical and audience response made Donnie Darko the cult film of the year - one whose dark ambiguities caused audiences to go back to the film again and again trying to fathom its mysteries.

This book brings its readers further into the world of Donnie Darko and its creator Richard Kelly. Contained within these pages are an in-depth interview with Richard Kelly who recounts the gestation of the film; the screenplay; photos and drawings from the film and artwork inspired by it. Donnie Darko will never surrender up all its mysteries, but this book will be an indispensable guide into its intriguing world.

yuck. The natural order goes book->film. Not the other way round. (who'd buy a novelisation of a film?)

KTS

It's not a novelization (though many people do buy them for some reason!).It's a book that's all about the film, plus also includes the screenplay.

Knowing has legal compliations attached. Bessie is a script which is meant to be the mind-blowing one. Theres also a script called Domino which Tony Scott might or might not fuck up.
