Instinct!

Huh?

Well that's the name of Cork's newest Gay Pub, (aka what was "the oyster")

I was speaking ot the new manager at the Film Premiere last night and he told me that he hopes to open around Patricks Day Weekend.
(no exact dates yet).

Personally I can't wait!

The original name was good enough, blue oyster and all. I guess they had to change it so the old clientele would know the old pub was no more.

It's fantastic that there is going to be a third gay venue in Cork, but are we as a community making enough effort to create alcohol free spaces and events (e.g. Rainbow Ramblers and the UCCLGB SOC events?)

jc
23rd February 2004, 10:32 AM
good point but why not go ahead and arrange stuff? i cant wait for the opening of this new pub either... the olf familiar ones are becoming dull, mondain and tiring... a new gay bar is just what the cork gay scene needs... something different!

amnesiac

Is it Instinct with an exclamtion mark?

I would have prefered !nst!nct

Rec
23rd February 2004, 02:10 PM
There's a certain paradox in contrasting the scale of "different" amnesiac and jc see.
a new gay bar is just what the cork gay scene needs... something different!

IMHO something different would be a gay cafe - something along the lines of gingerbread house - and it could be just passively gay ie "straight friendly" to keep custom up. I think all irish cities are sorely in need of a non-alcoholic meeting spot for gay people where people can meet in the evening/night as well as during the day. Something like a gay tribes.

jc
23rd February 2004, 02:58 PM
ya i guess a gay cafe would be a nice option to have... but couldnt u say these bars could also serve that purpose during the day? or are they even open at that time? then again, theres a whole differernt atmosphere in a bar to what there is in a cafe! isnt tribes kinda already gay anyway though?

redbulljunkie
23rd February 2004, 03:30 PM
I second that motion for a gay cafe [)].

Is the lemon jelly a gay cafe?

Bootyzilla
23rd February 2004, 03:45 PM
I don't think there's much of a market in Cork for a gay cafe right now. Even the Club's cafe closed and it's taken this long for three bars to appear... and the third one isn't even open yet. It would be great, don't get me wrong, but I don't think there's enough out gay men & women in cork to support one just now.

Taboo is a chav bar. Always has been, always will.

TopLad
25th February 2004, 01:57 PM
A question is this the end of the club. Will people now go elsewhere & not support the club? I for one remember the days when the club was the only place & how we all packed into the place. Knowing the gay community, Id say loyalty wont come into it. As they say - a new brrom sweeps clean. I hope that this new place wont signal the death of the club - dingy and all as it is. Lets just remember the many gud nites had there by most. And I'm being serious here.

Rec
25th February 2004, 02:01 PM
With competition they'll have to rise to the standard or sink by the wayside - that's the way it is!
- one thing they could do is improve the smell - it's the only nightclub that either smells of disinfectant or incense!
What's up with that?

Tom RED
25th February 2004, 02:44 PM
I think the only way Taboo will survive when Instinct opens is to remarket itself and appeal to a new clientele. Maybe like the 'Out On the Liffey' in Dublin. It can be known as Cork's very own dodgy gay bar.

If Instinct is a late bar/club as well hopefully the Other Place will survive. It will be great to have a choice in Cork for clubs as well as pubs. [)]

Rec
25th February 2004, 02:50 PM
Yeah maybe the other place can remodel itself as the grungy studenty night out on weekends, that way they wouldn't have to redecorate.

Ugh "Out On The Liffey"! I heard from my sis who was on the scene three years before me up in dublin - that at one point OOTL was quite chilled and cool, but it just got dodgier and dodgier. I've been in it maybe twice and each time it's the whole "everyone turns around and stares right at you" thing and the clientele is a bizarre mix of scary trannies, rent boys, chicken hawks and scary diesels. Keep well away anyone who's going out in dublin.

LeBaron
25th February 2004, 02:52 PM
I still think that there is room for three pubs, and parhaps with the opening of Instinct we will see - as happened when Taboo opened - a wave of new faces on the scene.

Just rememner all the new faces who were at de fillum who you would never see in either Loafers or Taboo... perhaps we will see them in Instinct

A suggestion I and some others made, as it's the only relatively high-profile, new bar that's lying empty at the moment.

I didn't mean it to be a personal attack as I am sure JC's persona on these boards doesnt reflect the person he is entirely.

i dont think the cork scene caters for enjoyment! just back stabbing, spite, and complete social crawlers!

Make up your mind about the scene, JC, I mean really - in so many posts you claim to hate it and then in more you say not. And in one particularly memorable post you claimed the Scene has made you more camp. (http//gaycork.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1614 in case of selective amnesia). Does that kind of repeated exposure, on top of repeated requests for information about Instinct, opinions on scene-based events etc., really sound like someone who hates the atmosphere of backstabbing social crawling? I have to wonder, if it's really all that bad, why you bother to go out at all.

quoteOriginally posted by jc
but yeah, u seem to fit right in... so if this is what u call 'enjoyment' ... u know what u can do with it!

Assuming you're not addressing this directly to me, and mean it in a more general sense, have you ever stopped for a second to think that any scene is purely what you make it? If, like you say, you're the recipient of such a torrent of emotional bullying each and every night you go out, try to stop and consider why everyone is so awful to you. Nobody is awful to me. Or to my friends. As a matter of fact, the cork scene's social interaction is neither more nor less friendly than anywhere else I've ever been. Do you get bad reactions from people on the scene becuase you give them a bad impression of yourself?

Just a thought... ...but the last person to insist 'They're all marching wrong except my Johnny' was fictional.
