This was originally posted on my other blog but I have expanded it here.

I have read two blog posts recently that will send chills down the spine of everyperson in Ireland who has campiagned for Gay Partnerships (Unions, Marriages, Whaterver you want to call em!). Two high profile figures in Biffo's Cabinet are not fans of the Gays.

They are Mary Coughlan and Dermot Ahern.

Now Mary Coughlan is Tánaiste, as well as Minister for Trade, Enterprise and Employment, and therefore holds alot of sway in Cabinet. She has a history for now likeing the Gays. According to David Garrahy's blog post "Táiniste don't <3 the gays :-("

He says,
Quote:
she’s targeted diligently has been the undermining of the rights of gay people. As Minister for Social and Family affairs in March 2004, she attempted to introduce legislation withdrawing protections and rights from gay partners under an amendment to Social Welfare legislation. The amendment would have defined the word “spouse” solely in terms of opposite sex relationships
Yikes is all I say. Alot of Gay Rights are unenumerated rights, as in they are not explictly stated but can be "read" from a right that does exist by the courts, this would have rolled alot of those rights back by actually defining a spouse.

He also reports that
Quote:
Minister Coughlan took it upon herself to tell a European Union conference on Family and Social policy that Ireland would never be ready for same-sex marriage or gay adoption.
Hold up now? Never? I have huge problems with that! Ireland in my opinion is ready for recognition of relationships. Gay Adoption is a different story and long fight lies ahead on that one.

Now on to Dermot Ahern, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.Maman Poulet highlights Dermot Aherns attitude towards the Gays in "Dermot Ahern and Same Sex Families".

She writes
Quote:
Mr. D. Ahern: I do not often find myself in agreement with my constituency colleague, Deputy McGahon, [MP adds - FG TD for Louth and vociferous opponent of decriminialisation of homosexuality] but on this occasion I am. Perhaps it has something to do with the atmosphere in our constituency.
So what was he agreeing with? Maman tells us
Quote:
Homosexuality is a departure from normality and while homosexuals deserve our compassion they do not deserve our tolerance. That is how the man in the street thinks. I know of no homosexual who has been discriminated against. Such people have a persecution complex because they know they are different from the masses or normal society. They endure inner torment and it is not a question of the way others view them.

The Lord provided us with sexual organs for a specific purpose. Homosexuals are like left hand drivers driving on the right hand side of the road. The Minister should seek a derogation from the ruling of the European Court to prevent this unacceptable legislation being foisted on the Irish people. I remind the Minister that the age of consent has been reduced to 12 years in Holland. Will we have to accept such an appalling move in years to come? Many Members of the Minister’s party are very unhappy about this legislation although some of them have expressed their support for it. The Minister should put the issue to the people in a referendum.
Eek! Thats from a Fine Gael TD. Something I am ashamed of as a Fine Gael member, but things have moved on, but anyway I digress. So what does this mean? Well Ahern's department, Justice, Equality and Law Reform has responsibility for writing the legislation on Gay Partnerships. The publishing of the 'heads' of this bill have been delayed yet again.

My point is will we see them under the Biffo's leadership? With Coughlan and Ahern holding poistions that can potential block it, I don't think so. Do you?

I always have my doubts over Mary, but fingers crossed that things won't be delayed overall.
