Baltimore's scribe of the salacious, John Waters, confirmed yesterday that he has been asked to start work on a sequel to Hairspray, his story of big hair and integrated dance halls that became the surprise movie musical hit of 2007.

"I am just beginning to think about it," said Waters, adding he signed the deal with New Line Cinema, a Warner Bros. subsidiary, within the past two weeks. "I'm just figuring out what it is."

Waters, who doesn't like to talk about any of his projects in advance, suspects most of the characters from the original Hairspray will return. "In all sequels, you try to get as many of them back as possible," he said.

A Hairspray sequel, with most of the creative team from the first movie returning, would also give the filmmakers a second chance to do right by Baltimore, which was passed over in favor of Toronto when the musical was filmed in the summer and fall of 2006. At the time, producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan said Baltimore lacked the huge soundstages necessary for such a lavish production.

Although no such facilities have been built in Baltimore in the past two years, existing buildings could probably meet the filmmakers' needs, said Hannah Lee Byron, the state's assistant secretary for tourism, film and the arts.

"This would give us another opportunity to go after it," Byron said. "I would hope that we would have an opportunity to show them other venues that would possibly work. ... We never got to that stage before."

The Hairspray sequel is scheduled to open in July 2010, according to Variety, which first reported the story of Waters' involvement. Just weeks after seeing a Broadway musical adaptation of his 1990 film Cry-Baby close last month after 68 performances, he signed to write a treatment, or outline, detailing the characters and storyline for the new film.

The story of Hairspray, which Waters wrote and made into a film in 1988, revolves around the character of Tracy Turnblad. She's a big girl (some would say overweight, but true fans realize that term is way too judgmental) in early-'60s Baltimore who dreams of becoming a dancer on the local Corny Collins Show while also helping to integrate it. The film starred Ricki Lake as Tracy and Divine as her mom, Edna.

Waters' film was adapted into a Broadway musical that opened in 2002 and went on to win eight Tonys, including a best actress award for Marissa Jaret Winokur, who succeeded Lake as Tracy. Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein played Edna and earned a best actor Tony for his effort.

The movie version of the Broadway musical - which brought stars Nikki Blonsky (a first-timer tapped to play Tracy), Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes and James Marsden to its Baltimore premiere in July 2007 - went on to earn more than $200 million in worldwide box-office receipts. Keeping in Hairspray's cross-dressing tradition, John Travolta played Edna.

Waters' initial story found its inspiration in The Buddy Deane Show, a local TV staple in the early '60s, the years between the rise of Elvis and the Beatles. While he refused to speculate on what direction the sequel might take, Waters acknowledged that he will have to embellish the story well beyond the fate of its source material.

"What happened in real life was that the show was canceled, and that's kind of the end of the story," Waters said. "And then the '60s happened."

[Excerpt From My Soon To Be Blue Movie: Kookies and Whipped Cream, Inspired by Cook with Gaycork.com]

The following interview may contain sexy language, graphic thoughts, and ejaculation:

Rep: Thank you for taking the call the other night, may i say you look fab!
Kooks: Aw thanks, I just couldn't help but notice your *reasts too!
Rep: Ah yes [Casually buttons up shirt[:'']] so how did you get your un-usual name?!
Kooks: Well...its kind of long, and difficult to take some of the time, but the story is always good for a laugh. It kind of well, slipped out one day while me and some of my boys were looking through mags. My girl-friend at the time had got into a baking cakes mode, you know, trying out which type of weed went best, and stumbled upon a reciepe for a space age cake ".....Wha?".
Rep: Pardon?
Kooks: No that was the name of the cake ".....wha?" some dude in California came up with it after he binged on a load of Lsd.
[Rep looks slightly un-comfortable]
Kooks: So anyway, much to everyones popular belief that my name was taken from Maryland, my girl called me down stairs to ask for her opinion, as she didn't have lsd to make the cake and asked what could be used instead.
Rep: I see...
Kooks: So well I suggested Lemon as I like the tatse of lemon and a bit of bananna wouldn't go bad either, you know ,something different, but she didn't like it as it was a bit gay, really didn't understand it but we went with the lemon, and after much debate some melon.
Rep: Sounds nice!
Kooks: Oh it was! An hour later the boys found us ontop of the table, and decided to whip some cream of their own, anyway, be-tween the spoons and the boys new found love of "cooking" the table was covered in whipped cream the boys made and lemon juice from my girl. So she got out some flour and stared to make the cake on the table and what not.
Rep: ...a-and, you baked, the erm, cake?
Kooks: Sure did, it was as sweet as a Maryland, but better!
Rep: Rrrright...well how did that attribute to the name?
Kooks: Ah well see we decided to call the new cake something, and seeming as it tasted so good and so much effort was made in making it we called it Nookie Kookie, cause some nuts got in as well.
Rep: ....Well that makes for good read.
Kooks: Yup!
Rep: So how long have you been living in Cork?
Kooks: Ah well everyone knows I was left on a doorstop in a church in Knocknaheeny, and soon was adopted by a lesbian transvestite hermaphrodite French couple in The South Side Of The City, the Du Marchés, mind it wasn't Kookie back then it was Maurice...after there doctor in Thailand.
Rep: I couldn't help but notice, "on" a doorstop?
Kooks: Oh, well it was more a burnt out car stuck in-between the church door.
Rep: Ok....and you often get stuck in burnt out cars?
Kooks: Well obviously, no.
Rep: Any comments on your more recent stint in the Mallow to Dublin cross-country robbery? €10.000 worth of diamonds stolen from a local Mallow Jeweller?
Kooks: Ah...no.
Rep: Those are real diamonds your wearing, yes?
Kooks: They were a gift...from a friend...who erm, loves me very much.
Rep: I see, you've gone all red Ms Du Marché?
Kooks: My Dispepsia I'm afraid.
Rep: Any comments on the Illegal brothel which was linked with your name in West Cork last tuesday?

The Blue Movie won't obviously be released on bebo or the net in general, parts may be, such as shots of a bowl and the cooker that sort of thing, but its freely avaliable in a porn or cookery store near you or directly from the Madame herself, and remember, happy cooking!

Marc Platt Productions currently has several projects of interest to theatre plans in the works, including a film version of the international hit Wicked, a remake of Andrew Lloyd Webbers "Jesus Christ Superstar" and a new motion picture about the life of the late composer George Gershwin.

Universal Pictures production president Donna Langley told the industry paper, "Our goal now is absolutely to make the Wicked film, but much like Judy Craymer wouldn't give up screen rights to Mamma Mia! until the stage show had reached its pinnacle, Marc and Stephen Schwartz are very mindful of the right timing. But we're dying to do it."

Platt told Variety that he and Wicked co-producer David Stone are currently in "early movie talks" with the studio. Winnie Holzman, who penned the Tony-nominated book for Wicked, will write the film's screenplay. No casting has been mentioned.

Platt is also currently in discussions with several filmmakers for a remake of "Jesus Christ Superstar," the film based on the Lloyd Webber-Rice musical of the same name.

Also on Platt's plate: the Rob Marshall-directed "Nine" for the Weinstein Company and the aforementioned biographical film "Gershwin" penned by Doug Wright. The latter, which Platt will create with Michael Feinstein, revolves around "Gershwin's life during the formative stages of Porgy and Bess," according to Variety.

Platt will be represented on Broadway next season with the revival of Pal Joey at Studio 54 co-starring Christian Hoff, Stockard Channing and Martha Plimpton.

And now the former Baywatch star has revealed the on-off couple has no plans to break ties, because Lee is such an important part of her family.

She says: "We are great friends, we are a package deal that's for sure. I am spending a lot of time with him this summer... We enjoy spending time together... It's just one of those things. He is the father of your kids and you can't get rid of them."

Anderson adds: "My family, kids and Tommy are my priority, and they are my focus."

Since her marriage to Lee, Anderson has wed and divorced rock/rapper Kid Rock, and her brief marriage to film producer Rick Salomon was annulled earlier this year.

I found this via a group on facebook that I have gotten involved in. The group is "Voter Registration Campaign for European Elections 2009" and I obviously being of a political disposition and Pro-EU in my own way support it.

The group was created by Michael Bourguignon a dutch writer on www.eurosduvillage.com.

He has suggested three ways of engaging Europeans with the elections that will take place in 2009 in an article on that website entitled "The Individual’s Responsibility for Change".

I would recommend reading the full article, but I have reproduced the 3 ways below!

The three ways are

Quote:

Firstly, the turn-out numbers for this election have always been low. The facts and figures point to a decreasing rate of participation in an already low voter turn-out. This was represented in statements from the then out-going Parliamentary President in 2004, Pat Cox, that stated that "Regrettably, Europe is too absent from European elections in both East and West." Many analysts saw the elections as presenting the bill for national governments and not taking European issues into hand.

What we need today is a consensus from European parties to engage in their powers of electing Commissioners and other areas where their competence can change Europe. With Lisbon hopefully coming into effect, the powers of the Parliament will be strengthened and parties can have a larger say in choosing the European Commission and European Parliament Presidents. Thus political parties would be able to create platforms that engage in choosing these newly created presidential posts to which citizens can then relate to — personal figures rather than abstract policies.

Secondly, another key component to incorporating citizens into Europe can be taken from the current US elections: creating grassroots campaigns. Europe needs to create a grassroots program where the most unlikely actor can play a crucial role: The Committee of the Regions.

Voting rights are the rights held by individuals and no-where can the subsidarity principle be applied more perfectly than in this area. In order to try to generate a grassroots program the Committee of the Regions must entrust to the local political parties their sense of being able to generate ground action in their areas and call for citizens to get involved. This will bring down the barriers to language and communication and render politics on a local framework to promote a more perfect union.

Finally, what Europe needs to do is to create a European-wide campaign for voter-registration. This will undoubtedly give the campaign back to the citizen and make him part of a larger picture, and finally hope to engage citizens in Europe. Depending on the national voting requirements of each Member State, registering voters, or making them aware how important voting actually is in the overall picture of the EU , will give them a feeling of responsibility for political action and make them feel part European integration. It is a simple formula for imformative action that depends ultimately on individiual responsability to counter the dissatisfaction and alienatation that most Europeans have on when tackling European issues.

So join the facebook group and if you are an EU resident in Ireland ensure you are registered to vote in the Euro's (and locals) next year by logging on to www.checktheregister.ie

Its Your Europe, Get Involved!

So over on EurActiv Daniel Gros & Sebastian Kurpas of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) have come up with a suggestions for the future of the Lisbon treaty

Member states would "ratify the consolidated treaties as amended by the Treaty of Lisbon". This consolidated text would contain "exactly the same substance" as the Lisbon Treaty. Once all 26 member states have ratified it, it would be submitted to Ireland, which could be presented with protocols or opt-outs on sensitive issues such as tax policy, neutrality and abortion, the authors explain.

The paper concludes that a second Irish referendum could ask the question: "Does Ireland wish to join the EU 26 with the Lisbon Treaty in force?". This would effectively confront the Irish with two alternatives: 'in' or 'out'.

An interesting proposal that might ensure a Yes vote. Ireland cannot survive outside the EU.

What next? How to save the Treaty of Lisbon (Pdf)

The other scenarios are:
* Give up the Lisbon Treaty and continue with the Treaty of Nice: Seen as an "easy way out", this solution "would be highly problematic for the credibility of the EU" and strenghthen the notion that it is unable to reform its institutions, believe the authors.
* Reopen negotiations on a new Treaty: This is "the least likely of all options," they claim, as doing so would necessitate dealing with "additional demands" made by member states.
* 'Flexible integration': Both a "core Europe" consisting of particular countries or a "Europe à la carte" composed of country groupings on specific issues would be unable to achieve key institutional reforms, believe the authors. It would make the system more complex and incoherent and lead to a "lack of transparency", they say, suggesting that "common standards would be replaced by first class and second class members" thus impacting on democratic values.
* Continue the ratification process and hold a second referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon in Ireland: The authors argue that this is the most realistic option as "a second referendum would have a higher chance of succeeding once all 26 have ratified". But they admit that holding another vote on the same issues would be a "high-risk strategy" as a second Irish rejection would leave the bloc in the same "legal impasse" if not worse. "The Treaty of Lisbon would effectively be dead, unless some other method is found that would allow the Union to proceed even without Ireland."

All of which I would oppose. As for the Plan B, i would find it hard to vote no, if the Government did the secure the Opt-outs and protocols that we want as a nation.

I am very annoyed!!! 55% of people eligible to vote turned up to vote on June 12th and the majority said "NO".

Though I was supporting a "Yes" vote during the campaign, if EU leaders are adamant that we vote on this treaty without changes then I will vote NO on the second go round.

I want a Europe that is democratic and transparent. This is not how we get it! Ignoring the democratic will of the Irish people will not endear Europe to us.

When France and the Netherland voted "NO" there voices were respected. Why aren't ours?

Some during the referendum claimed a "No" vote would lead to a two tier Europe. What the vote has shown is that there IS a two tier Europe, One Europe of core founding and large states and one of late comers on the periphry.

This is not a fair Europe.

This outcome has actually led me to become quote Eurosceptic which is strange considering I do support a united Europe....

Time to go rethink where I stand....
