The Joye of Snacks

Blog entry posted by triton201, Nov 23, 2010.

I was watching a bit of 'Julie & Julia' for the first time over the weekend, and it got me thinking it might be worth challenging myself to do one new recipe a week (I know I wouldn't have the time / energy / appetite to do it more often than that.). Got to get me a few recipes to be starting off with.

So any suggestions for recipes that are good and simple to start myself off on would be welcome.
I have no truck with making all the sauces etc myself, so I'm kicking off this first week Thursday evening with a lasagne mealpack yoke...with a few extra bits/substitutions chucked in.

Why am I going to try this? Because I've recently examined the list of what I've been eating, and found I'd pretty much forgotten to eat. Was walking earlier and was just exhausted, but it's not surprising considering two sandwiches this afternoon and a bowl of Weetabix this evening are all I've had today (Yesterday I had a plate of stew early afternoon, and in the evening a burger, a handful of chips and some beans).
Absent minded or no, I can do better than that.
Budget is relatively low, so cheap and cheerful is the way to go.

It'd be great craic to have a friend or two who'd give it a lash too. That way on a night one person could do the main course, another do the starter, and a third the dessert!:D Or even all get stuck into doing the main course.

Also, the following quote seems to be doing the rounds on Twitter and Facebook at the moment:

It's true that Gillian is less than 4 months older than Nigella...but compare the two:

Now where's that double-chocolate mousse...

Right. Haven't done anything with this blog for quite a while, cos frankly I can't afford to make anything fancy at all. Or anything cheap either.

    BUT

I'm gonna get back into this food thing.
First, after having been inspired by Chinese Take-away, I am loving the combination of chips, rice, curry sauce and chicken altogether.
Leaving the chips out of it is nice (and probably significantly healthier), but I think it's worth leaving them in.

A Blender is only fantastic for making soup. A few veg, cleaned, washed, chopped, chucked in, blitzed to bits, thrown in a pot with water and such, pinch of salt, and a bit of milk to cream it up, and/or a spud to thicken it, and a nice soup won't be long in the making.
The leftovers from many a dinner have made the dinner for the following day in that way.

Meringue is presently at the top of the list of desserts I'm learning to make. My mother has her own version of the recipe which is definitely worth more to me to learn than any other. My brother made two reasonable attempts at it lately...hopefully I won't burn the kitchen down beating the eggs.
