Lost hamster

My hamster Harry is missing.

He figured out a way of unlocking his cage door some weeks ago, necessitating the use of two locks and some wire to secure the door. My other half visited us last night and was playing with Harry. He locked his cage last night, not me.

I got up this morning and the cage door was partially open and Harry was nowhere to be found. I looked behind every piece of furniture I could think of but to no avail. Cue a massive argument between me and my other half. Eventually I left for work having left piles of seeds in each room and a dusting of flour on the ground in an attempt to track him to his hiding place.

I'm just back from work and there is no sign of him anywhere. This makes me very sad.

It feels quite immature and child like to be this upset and concerned for a rodent but I genuinely am.

I don't think it's immature at all! He's your pet, you love him, it seems perfectly natural to me. If there's no sign by this evening would it be beyond reasonable to carefully slash the undersides of the sofas and have a look with a torch?

Might be worthwhile to not sit on them for a while as well.

Be careful of electrics - plug them out if possible - he might chew on a wire....and....well....you know the rest...

Had a hamster a long time ago called Nibbles, she learned to unscrew the cover of a tower from her cage from the inside - they are little escape artists. I found usually the best way of catching her was to use a something like a glass bottle with a medium opening or a carafe lying on its side, filled with wood chippings and with food at the end. She would climb in looking for the food and then sleep in the chippings. I guess that kinda needs you to know generally where she might be luckily Nibbles always went to one place where part of the skirting board was missing.
