Anne Hathaway tp play Selina Kyle in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle (AKA Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Christopher Nolan stated, "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story."

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, "I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies."

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

The phrase " new interpretation of Bane" worries me. I know there are not many actors with the bulk to pull the role off but I hope they don't ruin it. One shite version was enough with plant Bain in Batman and Robin

I think she's a fantastic choice.Maybe not the most obvious but i've been saying for months that she could a very inspired leftfield choice.She's going to be brilliant.
As for the Bane thing,i trust that Nolan will do the character justice and erase the way the character was done in that shitfest BATMAN AND ROBIN.I have a feeling that Bain won't be the main villian though.There has been talk that Talia Al-Ghul who is the daughter of Liam Neeson's character from BEGINS will be in the film too.Very very excited about this film!

Slightly worried about the Bane stuff. I would've preferred him as a Hugo Strange or The Riddler type character to fit in with Bruce Wayne's conflict of being Batman. Now he's just playing a bit of muscle with an acid problem.

There were a few characters mentioned like Hugo Strange and Black Mask. My guess is it will be a mob boss of some description.

This character is meant to tie the series together. There were rumours that Liam Neeson would reprise his roll as Ras Al-Ghul for this but they've died down.

The Talia rumours seemed fairly well sourced.Might not be true though.It has been confirmed though that there will be two female leads,one a villianess and one a love interest i think.I wouldn't be surprised if Talia was the villianess and Selina was the love interest.I also wouldn't be surprised if she was just Selina Kyle and not Catwoman in the film or maybe becomes Catwoman very late in the film.

Although I am inclined to agree with Existo Solvo. Surely, the news would have read "Anne Hathaway to play Catwoman" if she were actually playing Catwoman?

EDIT: Pushed neither way RE Bane. Although I do think Tom Hardy could play anything at all, the man is very talented.

I would like to see a new Bane, he is fairly dated at this stage, I do like what they are doing with the characters. As for Anne I'll keep an open mind till I see some sketches

But you know they will all be done with a taupe eyeliner on the back of a pantyliner.

And I was so hoping for Cher as Catwoman. You know it would be amazing...

I love Anne Hathaway and think she'll do a tremendous job. (If Nolan actually let's her, he has a knack for completely suffocating his female characters).

He did miscast Katie Holmes in the first film alright but Maggie Gyllenhaal was a massive improvement in the second one.It is time that they brought in the stronger female characters though and started dealing with Batman's weird love life.I cannot wait to see what Nolan does with Catwoman.If it's anything like what he did with Ra's Al-Ghul,The Scarecrow,The Joker and Harvey Dent then we're in for something amazing.I'm also looking forward to seeing his take on the realtionship between Batman and Catwoman and their alter-egos although he has big shoes to fill there in Tim Burton's take on the relationship in BATMAN RETURNS.

Seeing as this is Nolan's final Batman is he basing this film on the Knightfall story arc? Having re-aqcuainted myself with Knightfall and indeed Bane, I think Bane can be an excellent adversary for Batman provided he's the super genius instead of the piece of muscle Joel Schumacher offered us.

But... Maggie Gyllenhaal was a train wreck! There I said it!
I'm sorry - Bruce Wayne handsome Billionaire playboy by day/ the ultimate crime fighter and detective at night.... as well as the city DA both fall madly in love... with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Ha! She looked like Droopy! Woof! gods i shiver at the thought - throughout the entire film it looked like she had not slept in weeks!

Personally, as a huge batman fan and collector, if this is their last film then they should have a final scene something similar to that of the start of Frank Millers All star batman and robin and just end it on a note. Robin looks utterly lame a lot of the time and I don't want to see 'Robin' as such (what would be the point) but would be interesting to simply see Dick Grayson near the end of the film as THAT IS ultimately where to story continues and changes Batman forever.

The first pic of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman has just been released online.Not sure if this is her final suit or an earlier model that she wears earlier in the film but even if it is the final suit i love it.It fits in perfectly with what Nolan has been doing with these films.Delighted!

I like Anne Hathaway but as Catwoman, I HATE that idea. It just feels so very wrong. I keep thinking of 'Princess Diaries', 'Bride Wars', 'Devil wears Prada', 'Get Smart', 'Becoming Jane' and 'Ella Enchanted' (which I love). She played all those nice girl roles very well. The only serious role I have seen her in was 'Broke back Mountain' and she was useless.

Maybe she''ll be Selena Kyle who tries to be Catwoman but and at the end of the movie Cher bursts out of Annes belly and says 'This is how it's done you crazy bitch'......now that I like

She might prove me wrong but this smells of Katie and Maggie all over again
