Ledger and Gyllenhaal pair up as gay cowboys

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are in final negotiations to star as a pair of gay cowboys in Brokebrack Mountain, the next film from Crouching Tiger director Ang Lee. The picture is to shoot in the spring in locations around Wyoming.

Based on the novella by E Annie Proulx, Brokebrack Mountain ranges from 1963 to the mid-1980s and tells of a love affair between a midwestern ranch-hand and a Texas rodeo rider. The script has been adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana and the film will be produced by Focus Features.

Ledger recently completed work on The Brothers Grimm, for director Terry Gilliam, while Gyllenhaal is still flushed from the cult successes of Donnie Darko and The Good Girl. However, cynics may wonder if Brokebrack Mountain will prove a gamble too far. Certainly the omens aren't promising. Ang Lee's previous attempt at a historical western, Ride With the Devil, was a notable flop, while the last E Annie Proulx adaptation, The Shipping News, fared poorly at the box office.

I read Brokeback Mountain among other Annie Proulx Stories - My sis gave me a big book of 'em. Utterly black and depressing! I dunno - but gimme a modern day gay film where the character's sexuality is just incidental, the character has dealt with all the "big gay issues" and moved on and the film takes it up there - that's my fave gay film.

I've been inundated with "coming out" films, "Staying in" films, "getting Aids" films, "getting a beaten up/discrimated against" films and y'know, I prefer my films a bit more upbeat!
The mortally challenged horse is well and truly flogged ppl, let's move on!

No, I think Rumpty turned that role down for some action movie instead.
