I'm hoping to give this a go on the June w/end, know of at least one other person on here who's planning to do it & was wondering if there's anyone else? http://www.corkcitymarathon.ie/
It's on the day after the pride parade i believe? I'll be in no fit state to get out of bed, not to mind run 26 miles. But i would love to attempt a marathon before i die. Just to say i did it! Best of luck with it opus
It might be why you die if you did it the day after pride... lol I might consider doing it actually. I'm going all mad at the fitness stuff lately. *ponders* lol
Ah yes. That's why you called off going up the mountain on the grounds of 'work'? Come on - it's Marathon time!
I'm up to doing about 5 or 6 miles at the moment without my knees giving way, couldn't handle 26 miles lol
I am planning on doing part of it anyways... will see if I could make half ways!! I don't have the time or will to do the whole thing so will just take part as a member of a relay team.
I'm doing the whole thing! I was at the finish line last year watching people completing and everyone really seemed so pleased with themselves so I wanted to get some of that! I broke the ten mile mark yesterday for the first time so I'm really pleased with my progress!!
Don't think I'd ever manage to run that far without collapsing along the way. Well done to ye guys for planning to do it though, its a great thing to achieve.
I had a 4000 word essay due Monday and a 2000 word essay due Friday and I have to have a final draft of my thesis proposal due Monday next. I think that was adequate reason to call off our mountaineering. For me anyway! Must have a look at the weather for the weekend. I'd like to do the Marathon tho, or like some of the others said part of the way. Not sure how my knee would cope tho. We'll see how training goes!
ya im thinking about doing it aswell. been wanting to do a marathon with a while just never got around to it. want to do it for some charity... dunno which one yet tho..
I'm working a 24 shift immediately prior to the marathon so I don't think I'll do it this year. I trained for the Dublin marathon a couple of years ago only to pick up a nasty knee injury four weeks before the big day (and after multiple training runs >13 miles). Having to pull out of that was one of the biggest disappointments of my life.
How much training is involved in running a 26m marathon? Just curious really. Would love to do it some day but running on the road kills me, I find the threadmill easier on the knees especially when you have it on an incline. Great credit due to those who do it
Louis, for those not into running I think 12 weeks is the minimum time you need to spend on a training programme and 16-20 weeks is ideal. If you're willing to run three or four times a week it really is amazing how much stamina you build up and how much further you can reach each week. I would stay well clear of treadmills; they are far less forgiving than roads on the knees! The track at the Mardyke is great for shorter training runs; some road work has to be done to get acclimatised and The Farm out in Bishopstown is a great soft surface to alternate on. I'd really recommend this book for any people contemplating the marathon. http://www.amazon.com/Non-Runners-Marathon-Trainer-David-Whitsett/dp/1570281823
Thanks for the info, one question though if you practice on a track wont the roads kill you after wards when you changeover? No? I do hate jogging and running in general to be honest but it must be done and you are dead right when you build up your speed and stamina it is a great feeling. I really do have gammy knees I will do it though 'some day'
You need to train on roads yes but exclusively training on the roads make injury much more likely as I and my left knee found out to our cost.
After the xmas break, I'm getting back to doing 12km four times a week which I should be at in the next week or two. Then I'll add in a longer run at weekends, the longest I did back towards the end of last year was 28km so hopefully will be able to again. Thanks to everyone for the good wishes btw, feel there's no choice now but to go through with it
Best of luck Opus & LittleTimmy, something I always wanted to do. Keep us informed of your progression.
DITTO! Well done guys ye are great for doing this I really admire ye. I'll stick with me ole threadmill
Seeing as you asked, thought I might post here once a month to say how things are going just to reassure myself I'm making some progress This week I did ~15km on Mon, Tues & Thur, a fast (for me!) 5km on Fri and a ~19.5km run with a friend today. Weekly total of just over 42 miles.
