    As from here

What do people think? Good/bad idea, too much?

    I think bad idea...
Take a good look at where kids see smoking, and it's not the parks and beaches that they're getting the habit from. I find Reilly's proposal to have similar levels of wally-ness as his muppeting on about the dinners in hospitals.

It's only going to stress smokers out, so that they wind up smoking more, which I suppose will lead to extra packets of cigarettes sold, which.....means more for the exchequer.
What a fiendish bastard!! (If only I believed he were that smart.)

I just think it's a distractor.....so that people will talk about this instead of the economy etc.

Feck it....I'm supposed to steer clear of politics....it angries up my blood.

That's stupid. Outdoor places should be left alone.

I like to smoke in the park and on the beach. Also so unenforceable.

I'd be happy if we could just slap any smoker who throws their butts on the ground in the public places. There isn't a fucking litter fairy following you around picking up the rubbish from your death habit.

I only have two problems with a minority of smokers:
Throwing their butts on the ground.
Sometimes when your walking (wherever) getting blow back in your face if there smoking in front of you.

Other than that no problem. I live with a smoker and he's pretty respectful that I or my other flatmate don't smoke. I think this law will be un-enforceable as Fairbad says but I'm very much up for the ban in cars when children are there, cars are confined as it is but I believe only a minority of people do this anyway.

    Edit: Two points, included "minority"

To be fair I agree... I never smoke around kids in a confined space. I just hate the 'criminalisation' of smoking. I never throw my butts on the floor, I don't smoke into people's faces. When I'm smoking while with a group of non smokers I usually separate myself from the group. Just leave me alone in parks and beaches.

Oh I think it's insane the way smokers are being likened to "criminals". The way I see it is that the parks or the beaches etc are huge spaces, what's the problem? That is a bit over-board IMO. Just put bins in there for the environments sake.

Besides lets say "if" this was put into place, the parents are still going to smoke at home and the children are till going to be witness to this. My dad is a smoker and has and is always smoking when I pop around to visit 3 kids in my family (inc myself) and none of us smoke, the minister really needs to re-think this and using children as an excuse for a law is always a sly political move.

I should say (and have corrected) that only a minority of smokers throw their butts and or smoke into peoples face.

"Nanny state" is an overused phrase but this is what this smacks of a little. Banning it from public, outdoor places is a ridiculous measure. Kids are gonna see far worse things in their life than people smoking.
Inconsiderate smokers do piss me off. I smoke every so often (not habitually, though moreso in China 'cause they're so damn cheap!) and I always make sure my butts go in the bin and that I'm not smoking around people who don't like it. But those inconsiderate fuckwits are in the minority, and it's not fair to punish others just 'cause some are too lazy to find a bin.

If that bastard tries to make me stop smoking in public I will force feed him a pint of my blood...shur I am gay and only RIDDLED with AIDS....Oh wait...thats not true...How about this minister, do something that might make a fucking difference and allow gay men to give blood. I am going to continue my death stick habit in the hopes that someday I am a burden on the state....might actually get something back from the bastards.
